clutch brakes for riding mower

How hard is it to replace the brakes or what stops the riding mower when you press the clutch brake? The one seems to roll passed the brakes as if there isnt any from when it was purchased new and would directly stop. Murray 425008x

I think your Murray number shown is off slightly.

Locate the tiny brake disc on the right or left side of the hydrostatic unit at the rear. There is a center locking nut that can be tightened about a 1/4 turn. See if that improves the lack of brakes/parking brake.

If it does not the brake pads may be too worn.

its 425001x8 it is the 2004 model this is the part number 94049/94047 094047E701MA 094049E701MA right and left brake pad when you hit the brake clutch stops pushes brakes outward and lets drive belt slip or loosens it? says discontinued part at partstree and other places.

Do you have a photo on where to adjust this at the parts guide shows two L brackets with the pads made to them. As its a 2004 model mower that gets used 3-4 times a year for maybe 1.5 hours to cut the yard its still in great shape.

When rolling in 5-6 gear and hitting the brake as you normally would it seems like its simply clutches and rolls through. I havent seen about the park brake other then i use it to keep the mower running when i need to get off of it or jumpstart as the seat has to be up just push the pedal down and pull the park brake lever up and release.

What you are referring too is the regular brake, there is no separate parking brake, just the pedal lock mechanism to hold the brakes once applied.

Like I mentioned, try tightening the center nut just a little and see if that helps the brake function. It would help to jack up the rear of the mower if possible.

These differential units' w/brakes were used in many rider models besides Murray back then, so maybe used brake pads can be located on a salvage unit. Brake pads were not a very common replacement item, so most riders broke down for other reasons before the brakes ever got worn out.

Another idea is to disassemble carefully and see if you can fabricate some thin sheet metal shims that will fit in place behind each pad. It does not take anything real thick to shim them.

A little history:

Murray was an independent company that built riders until they filed for bankruptcy in 2004, then B&S/Generac/Gentek bought them out. That makes older replacement parts a little hard to find besides "generic" belts, pulleys, spindles and blades.

if you look on the left side of the transmission like you were sitting on the seat, on the transmission that is a lever and a long rod that goes to the clutch/brake pedal, remove the clip and the rod at the point where it meets the lever on the transmission, then you remove the bolts that hold the bracket that has the two steal buttons on the strap, you can remove the little disk clean all the parts put a light coat of oil on the two buttons that push again the round disk, if you let the machine set in the weather or wash it the two little button will sei
