gas is coming through the air cleaner and dripping all over, even when engine is off (model 1650 342cc engine-6000/7500 generator)
1. removed carb, cleaned jets and float, reassembled.
2. no leaks from bowl or gaskets (external check)
3. removed spark plug, wet, turned over engine and gas spurted out everywhere from hole
4. with fuel cock open, just sits and drips.
any thoughts?

Apparently you still have a needle and seat that is NOT sealing. Be sure to change that oil immediately.
A leaking carb is caused by the float needle not shutting off the fuel.
End of story
Thus the carb needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
If it is an older engine then a new fuel filter & fuel lines would no hurt nor send you to the poorhouse.
