i was wondering if the shims that are available for the end play can be placed on either end of the camshaft depending on the results. also how to make sure there is room for the shims or shim

ought to be enough room for the shims on the sump side of the cam.

Yes there is but is also spec amount of clearance (.003"-.005") as to be not too little or too much. May require multiple shims.

thank you so much,i used a straight edge and got results of an .008 clearance. i hope thats good enough. shims are on the way. i need to get the tool you used for accuracy .the shim i need is to go on the bottom side to raise the cam up i believe. between the pan and the camshaft journal .

the shims look fairly large in diameter to be going on the cam and journal end

if i have .008 when checking the camshaft endplay, i would have to put the shim or shims on the opposite end from the gear to decrease the clearance in the measurement. not the oil pan side of the camshaft journal unless im looking at the wrong way. it looks to me as if the camshaft has borrowed or rubbed down the surface of the housing opposite the oil pan side. if i add shim to get .005 where you take the measurement from, its going to push the camshaft even further into the journal on the opposite side of the oil pan.

putting the correct shim on the sump side, would also decrease the clearance.

yes but it wouldnt help return the cam to its original position, from where it has eaten into the crankcase side. does anyone have an opinion about putting the shim on the crank case side of the camshaft, where the wear is.
