Not a lawn mower but a snow thrower. It is a White Outdoor Products with a 10 hp Tecumseh engine. It has an electric start which uses 120 vac plus the manual start. When I tried it the electric starter this morning the starter just made the grinding sound not engaging the fly wheel. I disassembled it and lubed the starter drive, but the same results. Is this a replace the starter or is there some repair that can be done on the unit?

We need the numbers off of the engine fan cover or side of the block to reference what engine you have. Some parts for Tecumseh are becoming hard to find. Most starters can be repaired if the bushings are not worn out. An aftermarket starter may be available. Once again, you will need the numbers off of your engine.

Are the armature and field and brushes good. Do the windings look burnt? Did you take it apart or just throw some WD-40 on the bendix gear? Did you try to bench test it?
I cleaned the bendix gear with degreaser, then put a coat of oil on it, I did not disassemble the starter, or bench test. This machine is about 15 years old. Typically the electric drive is used one time at the beginning of the cold season to start it after sitting in storage from spring till fall. I would bring it to the garage put in fresh gasoline and use the starter to get it going then return it to the shed to wait for the snow. Very rarely would I use the electric starter since it is stored in a shed that has no power. in reality the electric started has probably had about two dozen starts on it. I am thinking this is something like a spring has broken due to age not use.
