This engine is on a Troy-Bilt portable generator. It stopped running during the last hurricane and wont fire a lick! It is getting gas, spark and air. I removed the valve cover and discovered that the tappet on the intake valve had worked loose and fell down in the head. Put back together, set both valves at .005. It still wont fire a lick! Anyone have any suggestions?

Let's start with the proper valve clearances.
Intake Valve Clearance .004 - .006 in (,10 - ,15 mm)
Exhaust Valve Clearance .009 - .011 in (,23 - ,28 mm)
Let us know your progress when you test after you fix the clearances.
You should download the manual. https://www.briggsandstratton.com/n...ualSearch.html?searchrequested=216315-0115-b1

Welcome to the forum!
I'm going to move this thread over to our Briggs and Stratton section.

Briggs shows proper valve gap at .004-006 for both valves. Blaz you may be thinking about the L head clearances. Are you sure that both valves are opening and closing properly. Makes me wonder if the intake valve didn't stick open and start the process of things going wrong. If by tappet you mean push rod then I would be looking at a sticky valve or possibly a moved valve guide, or loose intake valve seat. Or are you talking about the rocker coming loose.

ILENGINE I have been wrong before and will be wrong again. I got that info right from Briggs site. I double checked the numbers.
Found it. I posted info for "Model: 120000 and Model: 150000" Model: 200000 and Model: 210000 has the info you posted.

I got my numbers from the Briggs dealer site when I did the model lookup by model, type, trim. But I can understand where things can get confusing when using references sometimes.

Thanks to everyone for your very prompt responses. As to the valve clearances; I got those from a B&S tech at 800-444-7774. He said the clearance for both valves is .004 - .006 and I should use .005 on both. What I referred to as a tappet is the rocker arm adjustment screw and locknut that rides on top of the valve stem; used to adjust the valve clearance. Both valves are moving as they should. Short of buying a 'leakdown' tester, is there a way I can make this test? I have a compression gauge.
The valves are the same length so the ends should sit at the same height, if they don't then one of them is bent, burnt sticking or the seat has dropped out of position.
You also had your description backwards, the screw is the locking device & the nut is the adjuster.
Squirt a little starter fluid down the plug hole and pull the starter.
If it backfires out the carb then the inlet is cactus , backfiring out the exhaust can be OK.
How did it stop ?
If it stopped suddenly then the flywheel key might be cracked or broken so your nice spark might be happening at the same time.
