I have an Scotts S1742 riding lawn mower with a Briggs Intek 17hp OHV that doesn't want to crank over. I installed a new battery with the correct cranking amps but still no luck. If I turn the flywheel by hand a couple of times it seems to free it up and starts up when I turn the key. After that it will I can turn it off and will will start fine again for a few days, but if I don't start the tractor for a week the engine won't start until I turn the flywheel by hand again.

Anyone have any ideas what could be going on?

I believe the Scotts 1742 is the same as John Deere Sabre 1742GS and has the Intek 17hp OHV Model 311777 Type 0143-E1.

Thanks

It may be leaking gas into the cylinder due to leaking float needle causing hydroloc. Check for gas in the oil. After the engine sits for a few days or the period when you usually have trouble, remove the spark plug before attempting to start and see if it blows gas out. Caution, move plug wire well away from any possible fuel discharge as it may ignite.

This is an easy fix. Remove the spark plug and turn it over. If it turns over with no problem, then all you have to do is adjust your valves. 10 to 20 minutes tops. I set the exhaust and intake at .05. Some will tell you a .04 & .06. But .05 on both works fine.
