Hi all, new member with a query, hope someone can help, I have a old Wolseley merry-tiller with a Briggs 5hp engine, the number on the casing is 130202 0162016705251, which I believe makes it a 1967 model, the problem I have is it does not start, only with carb cleaner, but then dies straight away, I have put new fuel, in had the carb off and cleaned it , or so I believed, cleaned the mesh on the fuel pipe, and still no joy, one thing I noticed was the gasket on the carb to fuel tank was nearly non existent, don't know too much about engines , but do gaskets have to be watertight and not allow any air in.
If I buy a carb refurb kit, will it come with all neccesary gaskets and diaframph, many thanks all , hope

yes the rebuild kits come with all parts.
here are 2 kits.
One just has a new diaphragm & gasket
The other has that plus the spring washers & seal and needle is yours is an adjustable one.

Yes I believe so, but when I took out the needle it looked good, does it sound as though it could be the gaskets causing the trouble? thanks for your reply

There is a fuel pump and that pump needs a flexiable diaphragm and a good gasket.

:thumbdown:hi guys, just an update,I have fitted a new diaframph and a new gasket added new fuel, and it started straight away (still had to use a bit of carb cleaner). I then just let it sit there for about ten minutes, running fine, then all of a sudden it just stopped, it now still needs carb cleaner, but it dies straight away, when I cleaned the carb, all I did was blow compressed air down all the the appropriate holes and I could feel it coming through at the appropriate hole on the other side, does it sound as if I need to have the carb off again and clean through with some liquid, I have some isopropanol, would that be ok?, I'm not sure what else to do, anyone able to offer any ideas?

If the gasket between the tank and carb is not good and sealed tight, you will have an air leak which will not allow the pump to work properly.

Blowing the carb with compressed air is not a good idea unless you
1) turn down the air pressure
2) blow backwards so you blow the crap out of the passages not ram them deeper into them.

It really sounds like it is not pumping fuel .
The pick up tube is prone to cracking and if you removed it to clean the strainer, it might also have fallen off.
I use an ultrasonic carb cleaner and some times they require several repeat cycles to come good
