Brand new Troy Bilt riding mower too fast, how can I slow it down.

My 25 yo Honda 3011 rider finally gave it up and I replaced it with a Troy Bilt 42" Pony from Home Depot. Darn thing goes too fast for my 86 yo eyes, they don't see that quick. Besides smaller rear tires all ideas on slowing this puppy down are appreciated. I am well fixed for mechanical modifications. Thanks in advance, Cray

What kind of drive does it have? Is it a shift on the go or hydrostatic? Most troy bilts are the standard vari drive with a forward / reverse single speed trans. But haven’t seen a brand new one lately.

The machine is advertised on Home Depot as 7 speed transmission. but it is a varidrive with a expanding/contracting driving pulley at input to transmission. Cray

Lower the throttle.

Never ever run a ride on at any engine speed other that full speed.
Lowering the engine speed also lowers the blade speed and they are already going too slow ( by law ) .

The mower should have a lever marked 1 to 7
set it to 1 which is less than walking pace on most mowers.

Cray.
the speed of the mower is regulated by the tension on the front drive belt
This tension is applied by the clutch / brake pedal.
Push it in and set the speed to 7 then let it out , note who far back the pedal comes.
Do the same with speed 1 .
So the closer to engaging the brake the pedal is the slower the mower goes.
If position 1 is too fast you can back off the pedal, there is an adjustment under the mower which is never used to compensate for worn belts & pulleys.
Often wondered why they leave it there.
If you can get under the mower or get it up high enough you will see it
If you post the full model number from the tag under the seat we can look up the parts diagram to show you what you need to adjust.
