Assuming that my BR600 blower starts and runs normally at 40°, am I doing any harm to not make the change to the 'winter' setting?

Can you help with any info on the question? I know all about the machine's ability.

No need if it's above freezing. It's to prevent carburetor icing. It only takes 2 minutes to switch modes though.

I use 93 octane gasoline with a quality brand fuel treatment on all outdoor power equipment. Stihl brand fuel treatment, stay away from STABIL fuel treatment. If I had STIHL equipment I would use STIHL fuel treatment.
