Better "salt"

Is there an environmentally friendly way to help like the "ice salt" stuff does? I am told the salt hurts the dog's and cat's feet, something about their foot pad, any suggestions would be helpful.

Hi what i use is lawn fertilizer with nitrates ,then when it melts it good for the grass ,but i'm not sure what it does for the cats and dogs. Its melts the ice good to.:smile:
 
I will have to question the hardware store and see what they have and recommend. I don't want to hurt my fur babies if there is an alternative out there.
