Best way to prune roses?

For the first time we planted a small rose garden this year. I have absolutely no experience with them. They did well and took hold. Do I prune them now or wait until spring? Any basic guidelines to share??

A rose won't die when you prune it. Secondly, it is better to make a mistake in pruning roses than to let them grow at will. We had roses in our garden before. It's the set of thorns on it that makes pruning a bit challenging. Just wear gloves and don't worry about making mistakes. You'll get the pattern soon enough :)

I didn't know the first thing about it and just chopped ours right back to the ground after the flowers had finished. The following year they grew twice as big so I must have done something right.
