Best Grass For High Traffic Yard

We need to plant grass seed on most of our yard because I mowed it low last year and most of it has died. We need the hardiest grass for high traffic yards that's available. What would that be?
 
unless you get into specific types fescue is probably gonna do as good as any of the normal grasses again that is without getting into special blends and they are most time very expensive.
 
I don't want to put a lot of money into it. I just don't want to be in mud in my yard, so I'll pass on any special blends. With this cold snap, I know I can't plant it now. How long should I wait after it warms up?
