Turn the key... mowers starts right up.
Release the key ... mower shuts right off.

Safety switch somewhere? Oil level is good.

Replaced the ignition switch and now the world is good. Thanks.

So it turns out it was not the ignition switch. The wires to the arm safety switch broke and would only make contact randomly.

Yes and you test that by starting the engine then releasing the brake. Testing the switch is cheaper than replacing it. I am hopeful that it was not too costly of a mistake.
