Back up camera

My brother on law gave me one of those backup cameras Saturday evening. He said he had one on his vehicle and thought I might wold like to have one. I installed it this afternoon and I can actually see my hitch well enough to use it when hooking up my equipment trailer and my camper. If you don't have one and you hook up trailers a lot it looks like it will be a good thing.

I read in some lawn care business book before about this: Swift Hitch Trailer Hitch Aligner Portable Wireless Camera System with Night Vision Swift Hitch Electronics 04928

You can get them at Walmart. They are a good time saver when hooking up a trailer

The one I got is hooked up by mounting a bracket to the tag. There is a small box with an antenna on it that I hooked up on a wiring harness with a zip tie. I connected one wire to the back up lit and one to the ground. Tis wiring and the camera wire both plug into this box with the antenna on it. Then there is a small screen at you mount in the cab and plug a wire to it that plugs into the cigarette lighter. I works great or appears to. Will see over time.

When I unhook I use a small chunk of 4x4 under my driver side rear tire that way I just back up to the block

I have the Peak back up camera system and I love it. The 7" color monitor is nice and big for easy viewing and has a RCA input jack so it can double as a viewer also for dvd's etc. The waterproof camera mounts to the top of the rear license tag and it's signal to the monitor is wireless which made the installation relatively easy. It is very helpful to me and is a great timesaver in hitching up trailers and for blind spots. You can wire it to come on when you shift into reverse or do as I did and install a switch to manually activate the screen. It was new and inexpensive as I paid around $80 for it on fleabay a couple years ago. It works very well and I have not had any problems with it.

Mine is a Peak one as well everything seems the same other than I don't think my screen is that big. I will have to check on the RCA jack. Tanks for your review.

I like the idea of that handheld one... just too expensive. I have a wired version similiar to the peak unit that died... I may replace it with one of those peak wireless ones. I also bought a hitch that slides out to get to the trailer if you are a little off... pull a pin and lift a lever and it will slide out about 5 inches and move from side to side in an arc.

You may have this Peak one with the 3.5" screen.

They now have some new models with different screen sizes and controls. Camera also appears to adjust vertically easier( the old ones required spacers behind bracket), everything else looks the same.

Or the screen is in the rear view mirror they supply.

Nice info in this thread!!!! I tried the "tennis balls on a collapsible rod...like an old style radio antenna, with magnets" gadget but they are lame at helping. I thought the backup cameras were much more expensive than these Peak brands(of course more and more new vehicles...especially SUV's are including them as standard equipment, which would make aftermarket ones decrease in price). Another thing I recommend as an assistive device for trailering when after-dark is an important factor is a gizmo referred to as a White Knight Rear Lighting System. I've got one that I use for boating and RV'ing and my neighbor bought one for boating after seeing mine. It wires into your existing system, mounts over your hitch and has two VERY bright halogen bulbs in it. I've always considered the backup lights on ANY vehicle to be "as useless as the tits on a boar hog", but now when I put my truck in reverse it lights up the whole driveway/road behind my vehicle!!! It also has a switch where you can have it on constantly, off all the time or just on when you put the vehicle in reverse. You can check it out on the link below(and they are kinda pricey around $100...but I've never regretted putting one on my truck).
