B & S 5 hp, 130202-15, having difficulty staying running, linkage/mixture problems?

This is a Briggs and Stratton 5 hp engine, model # 130202-15-01, and is on an old Kemp shredder. Everything on the engine worked fine, except when the shredder got a little bogged down with just a little too much debris, I would have to close the choke to give it more gas.

Well, this machine vibrates severely and the intake manifold came loose from the engine and I let a tweaker mechanic try to fix it. Now, several hours and a new tank gasket and new governor spring later - the engine starts great but quits about five to fifteen seconds after starting, with or without a load ( meaning with the drive belt connected or not). I checked the intake under the air cleaner and it looks dry, and I checked the spark plug and it is good and has good "color" on the tip - whitish brown. My thoughts are that it is a fuel related problem, but I'm not sure what to do next?

I noticed the tweaker mechanic had some issue with the governor rod and spring, and he fought with it for hours. I eventually sent him home and disassembled the engine from the shredder and took the tank off, and then the carb. I remounted the carb, remounted the tank, replaced the governor spring and thought I had everything assembled right, but it will not stay running.

Also, the pull starter makes an awful racket for about twenty seconds, and it usually happens about ten five to ten seconds after start-up, then goes away


Anyone have a good line on how this engine works? I tried to download some manuals on related topics but was not able to?hanks!!!

The "racket" you mention, is likely a loud squeal, which is the starter clutch seizing momentarily on the crankshaft and will eventually throw the starter spring and rope out at you and lock up the engine until you unravel and replace all of the starter parts, so don't try to start it until you go into this part.

The other issues, we can better address if you put up the engine's complete model, type, code numbers...

Sounds fuel related, if you temporarily take the air filter off is it worse or better? Post pictures if you can of the linkages and spring assembled.
If the pull starter is making a squealing type noise when running then you will need to clean the starter clutch. It's easy to work on. I just worked on an old Master till tiller with this engine and starter clutch a few days ago and have another to work on next week.

yeah, but if your "code" number on the engine is before 1983, then your machine has/had points, and is another intelligent discussion altogether..

We would have to go into more detail about things...

Well I finally got back to this today. I'm not sure about a lot to things here. There must be a fuel related problem because the motor changes when the choke is moved. I changed the pump diaphragm and cleaned it with air, but did not remove any other pieces other than the two gaskets -tank and carb. I will look for a rebuild post with video.

I haven't much more of a clue with the governor linkage. I followed some advice within posts on this site to solve the carb problem first, then look at the governor. I did just that and it seems the governor spring is too tight. Well, I'm going to look at similar posts and get some tech sheets or manuals to look over

During today's test with the chipper running at full speed, the motor started off fine and ran at a good rpm's but after about 5 minutes of playing with the governor speed and tightening the choke lever, it seemed to run leaner and leaner. I kept moving the choke lever and it ran good again but eventually it just died. Fuel tank level about 1/6 at end of test.

I tested it again thirty minutes later. It started on the third pull with full choke, went to full open on choke right away, motor came up to speed with chipper/shredder mechanism. I was able to throw five branches in the brush feeder before the motor began to slowly, slowly wind down in rpm's until it quit, with nary a cough. This definitely sounds fuel, but I'm not familiar with these small engines.

I forgot to mention that I followed everyone's advice on the recoil starter. What a leaning experience!! Since taking it apart, cleaning and lubricating it, no more horrible squeals.

I tested the motor one last time. Now I'm searching for cheap carb replacements on eBay. This motor still runs for about a minute then gradually slows down and dies. I wonder, is there a way for fuel to feed this for about a minute before the fuel runs out or something shuts it off?:confused2:

I kept working on this throughout the day, a little bit at a time. I was reading through other posts and threads related to governor problems, no not Gray Davis or the Gropenator. I mean with the linkage, tang position, spring orientation and proper hole. On top of that I have a little trouble understanding how the governor works, but suffice it to say I found this: Adjusting the Governor | Mower Maintenance | Briggs & Stratton FAQ

and boy was it awesome! I had the governor arm at the far wrong end of adjustment. The motor just purrs now.But, alas, it still quits after about 20-40 seconds.

So, everything else eliminated, I guess I'm taking the carb apart. Can anyone point me to an excellent, brief video?
