Hello There,

I'm at the end of my wits. The mower is my grandfathers, and I've been trying to get it fixed for him. At first it wouldn't turn over past the first stroke. So we replaced both the battery and starter. It will start if we jump the battery with a Vehicle. However, it wouldn't start if we tried without jumping it. So we also replaced the solenoid, needless to say, that didn't change our situation. So, thinking it might be a bad cell in the new battery we exchanged the battery, and also pulled the flywheel and the charging ring looked great and with a voltage tester it was putting out 13volts. The coil is great, getting perfect spark, no problem with gas. (Side Note: if we take the spark-plug out, the engine turns over like it should, put the plug back in and it stops on first stroke.) When we do get the mower started with jumping the battery, it runs great, NO clacking, No bad sounds. Turn it off and it won't get past the first stroke on restart. Anymore details I can give just ask, but I really need help.

Thanks!

PS- Model Number is in the topic.

To keep cost down & protect Cranks & conrods from damage during hydraulic locks the starter motors on mowers are very low power.
To overcome the low power and allow pull starting the engine has a decompression mechanism built into the engine.
This mechanism is sensitive to valve lash.
Too much and there is not enough charge left in the cylinder to fire.
Too little and the starter can not turn the engine through the compression stroke.

If it is OHV pull off the rocker cover and adjust the valve lash.
If it is a side valve then the head has to come off and the valve stem or valve seat needs to be ground to obtain the correct clearences.
This means a new valve gasket, manifold gasket & exhaust gasket will be needed and you will need a low load tension wrench.

The spares man thanks you greatly for your generious & unnecessary contributions to his retirement fund.
