Another Toro Snowthrower Engine Not Starting

Good Evening All,

I have a snow thrower that isn't starting. It's a single-stage, 2 stroke. Ill pull the starter cable and the engine turns over smoothly but does not start.

Toro CCR 2450 GTS
Model 38413
SN: 210XXXX
Engine Model
Family: YL4XS1415AA
Model: 97-7007

I've owned this snowthrower its entire life, some years it's been stored properly, others not. Last spring I put Stabil in the tank ran it for a few minutes, drained the rest of the fuel, and stored it for the summer.

Last week I put fresh 50:1 mix fuel in the tank and tried starting it but it wouldn't start, a tune up was in order, so I replaced the fuel line, installed a new fuel filter and a new spark plug. OEM Plug is an NGK BPMR4A but Napa didn't have one of those, so I got an Autolite 2976 and gapped it to .032". Still not starting... I pulled the plug out and pulled the starting cable again and saw a spark between the center electrode and the ground electrode so I believe we have good spark.

This past weekend I pulled the carburetor off and gave it a good cleaning. The carb is a 98-7002. Every part that could come off that carb did and had ample amounts of carb cleaner sprayed on and through them. The plastic carb, all the brass pieces and float were all in good condition. I followed this guys video and this website and believe everything is clean as new.

At that point, I put the carb back on, tightened everything up, sprayed some starter fluid into the air intake, and pulled, and pulled and pulled. Small puffs of smoke came out of the exhaust but the engine never started.

Hoping someone here can give me a tip or two about what to try next.

Thanks!

Tim

First, don’t kill the me, I’m not trying to make anyone look foolish. Just trying to get a better picture of what is going on. You must remember that you have a 2001 unit and it might be on its last legs. That being said I’ve got a couple of things to try. Check to make sure you have good fresh fuel and have the proper mixture, in your case 50/1. I have switched to the new synthetic oil oils (in my case Opti-2) which allows for being a little off when mixing and can be used across multiple ratios. I would also be check cylinder compression, looking for a minimum of 100 psi on those R-Tech engines. I know you said that you disassembled the carb and cleaned everything, but two things I triple check on those plastic carbs. Make sure that the idle jet on the side of the carb is open. Also I replace the float needle and seat, plus adjust the float level, whenever I pull one of those plastic carbs apart. I have found the on those engines the NKG plug, set at .030” works best On these units. Don’t ask me why, but more than once all I have to do is replace another brand plug with NKG to get the unit running. Did you check for spark, at that age to coil may be bad? Last resort would be to remove the muffler and inspect the cylinder for galling and scoring. If it is in good shape rotate the crankshaft until you can blow out the crankcase with compressed air. If the crankcase has excess oil in it the engine will not fire. That is about all the suggestions I have, if you have more specific questions post back. Here is the service manual which may help. https://www.toro.com/getpub/6936
