A Nikki Carburetor Fails Me Again

The last two times I went to cut my grass, my mower would not start.
This is a Gravely Pro Turn 260 with a Kohler PS ZT740-3046 engine. I checked spark. Good on both cylinders. I checked for fuel. The pump is working. One more test. I put my hand over the air filter horn. She fired right off. Hum? The choke isn't closing all the way.
I found the choke linkage laying on the bottom muffler shield.

I have the service manual.
See (F) page 36. There is a little gray plastic attachment part that is broken off. (F) was laying on top of the lower muffler shied with a piece of broken plastic attached to the shaft.
I believe a new carburetor will be needed.
Is there a cross to that particular carburetor?

The attached photo will show the broken attachment point of the choke linkage.

Not a separate part, will need to replace the carb, or find a used carb at a repair shop to scavenge the choke shaft.

Looks like time to shop at Ebay. Just make sure you study the design you have and match it, because choke shafts are often different.

And I see the darn website is still screwed up. Back in a couple weeks or so to check it.

I want to remind people to blow your mower and engine off after cutting grass. My Gravely has 300 hours on the clock. I blow it off after every use with a leaf blower. When I had the engine cover off, I noticed that the engine cooling fins were very clean.

Hello MParr,

I will add to that by saying remove the top flywheel cover at least once a season to get any trapped debris out or mouse nests. Mice love tiny areas where they can crawl in and make a cozy nest, especially in the winter months. Baling twine, acorn shells, grass clippings and cotton material from wherever the critter could find it and pile it up inside under the cover.

Currently I am cleaning up a V-twin B&S on a zero turn and the oil filter was not quite tight enough. As one can imagine in dusty conditions the oil and dust combine to make a thick layer all over the platform and under the fan shroud. I have had to use a putty knife to get all the heavy stuff off before I can even pressure wash it.

I ordered a new OE carburetor through the dealership. I will pick it up tomorrow. They also had the OE choke kit. I will likely get that as well and repair the existing carburetor. You never know when you might need a spare.
