Started working on my 1974 8232 today. The carb was full of old 'gunk' so I gave it a good cleaning and blowing out. The reeds were really clean, as was the crankcase behind the reed plate. I cleaned the tank and fuel line out. Got it all back together and after a few pulls the old 2 stroke spit & sputtered, and came back to life :). Then gas ran out of the carb because the needle and seat are bad, but I've got a new kit I can throw in it. Took the muffler off to check the exhaust ports and they were clean as a whistle, and the crank was dry meaning the seal is good. The self propel tranny works good. I think I've got a good find here.

That's unusual in my experience. I read somewhere that the exhaust ports should be cleaned once a year but I don't think that happens very often in the real world. :laughing:

You definitely have a good find. I really like the look of the 8232. It's distinctively a 1970s machine. That styling couldn't have occurred before or since.

Thanks. As for the exhaust ports, I think that if the correct fuel/oil mix is used there shouldn't be much problem with them clogging up. But I will always pull the muffler and check whenever I start working on a mower I just got.

I think the newer formulations of two-stroke oil help a lot. The new stuff burns more completely - or so I've read.

The problem with most of the mowers I find is that the muffler probably hasn't been removed for over 30 years so the engine has the accumulation from all those years of use with non-modern oil.

I have a feeling that exhaust clogging is this 8232's main problem. There's a distinctive sound that the engine makes when it's clogged and this one has it.

Your mower looks to be in good shape. Need to get it running good. My other 8232 needs some work. I loaned it out to a family member and the starter rope broke, but they got a little carried away taking stuff apart to fix it. The armature plate was taken off and the needle bearing fell out of it. I've got a new seal but need a bearing as well to get it back together. I guess I need a wal mart weedeater brand to use as a loaner haha.
