I bought this mower new the same year my first daughter was born so it has some sentimental value to me. It wouldn't start at the beginning of this season. I replaced the carb and got it running. However, there is still a problem that I can't quite pinpoint.
The only way to get the mower to start is to choke it. After it starts, I can move the throttle to Fast and it will continue to idle. If I move the throttle toward Low, the engine dies and won't restart unless I choke it again. When it is running (Fast), engaging the blade also kills the engine.
So, I assumed it's running lean. I double and triple-checked the linkages to ensure I didn't reinstall them incorrectly when I installed the new carb. I tried adjust the carb's mixture screw but it had no effect. The only other thing I could think of is that it's getting more air than it should. I'm 95% sure I installed the 3 gaskets correctly, but I couldn't find a diagram anywhere that showed them. Maybe the $16 Amazon carb itself is the problem (this one)?
The engine is a GXV120. I'd really like to get it working properly again but really can't justify taking it to a shop and paying $150 or more to fix it.
