Hello Joe,
I am trying to figure out a transmission problem (I think). When I pull or push the handle above the rear axle to engage or disengage the gearbox, transmission, differential or whatever it does, nothing happens. I can push the tractor easily in either position. I think something is disconnected or broken. If you could forward any manuals or anything relating to this problem, I would appreciate it.
My e-mail is
bbutcher85@yahoo.com

Thank you.

Bob

Hey, Thanks Joe. The service manual you sent was for the later 316/318/420 machines but I needed that because I will be getting one when I have the $$$. The 1978 316 is just a renamed 300 series tractor because they wanted to introduce a new smaller size/horsepower 312 & 314 series and a 317 series, earlier Kohler powered 316's are completely different from the later Onan powered 316/318 & 420's. I guess I should of ask for a 300 series service manual and that would of covered it because they are supposed to be the same, >300/316<, my mistake. That service manual covers the 300/312/314/316 and the 317. Anyway, >>> THANK YOU JOE <<< for the later one. I have been bitten by the John Deere bug and I now have a JD 108 & JD 116 & 2 JD 185's & 1978 JD316 + a Craftsman 1000 & old Wheel-Horse & MTD something. Thanks again, Joe...!!! Jack

Hello,

I know this is an old thread but I am looking for the 1978 JD 316 manual. The link that is posted above is for the 316 with the Onan's engine from the 1980's. If this is still available or if any of the members who have a PDF copy I would appreciate getting my hands on one. Thank you, my email is johnknispel@gmail.com.

Thanks,

John

I received the manual - thanks Joe! My John Deere 316 hydraulics just stopped working. It was working when I was driving the tractor and then I shut it off for a bit and when I started it back up it would not move. After taking it apart it looks like a pin or screw is missing or broke off of the drive shaft by hydraulic couplings. The manual says it is a spring pin. However it looks like it has threads in the hole and it does not go all the way thru the hole. Not sure if what is left is a broken pin that just needs to be pounded out or what?JD316 Drive Shaft.jpg any help or advice is appreciated.

I think you are going to have more problems. The part I circled in red should be splined and the part that holds it that you think is a spring pin only stops the shaft from sliding off. I would start by first removing the PTO shaft I circled in green. From there turn the PTO shaft to see if you have a hole on the other side. If you do then you will need to drive out the spring pin and remove the part circled in red and see if the splines are intact.

thanks for the reply. come to find out my has a superseded part that has two threaded inserts that holds the shaft in place. I had one left that was worn. I bought two new ones and put them both in and I was good to go!
