A couple of days ago, my 2004 Prestige quit climbing hills. It still runs okay on flat ground, even though it sounds a little different than before, but bogs down and eventually stalls trying to climb hills. The air filter is clean and the oil has just been changed not long ago. Any thoughts?

Update:

A local dealer says the transmission is shot, so it looks like I'm in the market for an upgrade. The dealer says the 4wd feature on the newer Prestige is troublesome.

Anyone have any thoughts or opinions, pricing, etc. on this matter.

I only mow 1.5 acres but the most of it is very hilly which may have contributed to the transmission going out on my present model.

Absolutely, your drive belt from engine to transmission may need to be replaced along with idler pulleys. Deck will need to be removed to access drive belt & pulleys. Post your seven digit model number, thanks.

Did the dealer physically look at it? what about hydro oil change/or level?, or I hear they have a filter to clean. As mechanic mark says...give numbers...he is will to help you.

You might notice, he owns one, and his name says...MECHANIC!

Thanks for the quick responses guys.

Model# is 1694017

Noticed last night there is some light wispy blue smoke coming out of it occasionally, so it's probably internal.

Results see pages 33 & 34 in operators manual tractor drive belt slipping. See page 44 for drive belt replacement instructions, be sure to use Simplicity OEM parts. Your transmission is a Tuff Torque K71, I doubt your transmission has failed if you have been keeping it serviced with new oil & filter. Pages 30 & 31 in operators manual shows transmission maintenance. The K71 is a very tough transmission used in garden tractors. These are parts you need to replace after removing mower deck. Simplicity part numbers: drive belt 1721393sm, 1721134sm pulley w/bearing, 1721133sm idler pulley.
