I've got a 2002 mtd yard machine that runs great as far as the engine goes but that's as far as it goes. When I put it in any gear it just sits there. The pulley on top of the tranny is moving and that's it. I've taken the tranny out and removed the bottom cover to see if there was anything obvious but that too went nowhere. Then I noticed a couple of things that really confused me. First the left side hub spin a freely on the axle shaft. Second, if you hold the ring gear the right drive shaft will move without any gear being selected. When I took the axle assy apart I noticed it has spider gears inside the ring gear just like a limited slip posi traction rear end on a car. There are no broken parts in any of the parts here but I can't figure why it won't move. Can someone please help me figure this out. Many thanks

Need model & serial numbers from data plate on tractor.

The model # is 14AS825H062
The serial number is 1D201B50080
I also wanted to add that the left axle hub moves freely on the axle. Is this right? Thanks

Are you saying the wheel hub turns but the axle doesn't. If that is the case then you are missing the square key.

Yes sir. The left wheel hub spins freely on the axle. The right on doesn't but I've completely disassembled the tranny and can't find one problem. Wouldn't it still drive with just one axle operating correctly? Thanks

No. It has an open differential not a posi. Sounds like the problem is between the hub and axle that spin free of each other.

Went and looked at your transmission. You have the bolt on 4 lug hubs. There was some issues with the hub striping out on those hubs on various mowers.l Pull the hub off and check for striping.

Well, I figured it out. The free spinning hub didn't have a key way. It, and the axle are splined. And not very good I might add. There were hardly any splines left on either part. To fix it I was going to put in a drift pin but when I started drilling I got to the axle and that's where the drilling ceased. It must be case hardened. Anyway, I used that hole to tap and put in a set screw. I put one on the other side just for good measure. Now they all work properly. Thanks for the help from all.
