If you want any more help, I need the model numbers off the ID tag on the mower so I can look it up.
From the size of the spring it will either be on the spindle brake in which case there should be 2 of them or it goes against the engagement spring to aid the dissengagement of the blades.
If you looks closely at the deck there will be scuff marks where the spring has been rubbing the paint.

Its been awhile but as I remember as you sit on the seat on the left side there is a lever that adjust the mower height. The lever go's through a plastic insert and this spring is the levers detent.
