I inherited a green MTD TurfPower 42" lawn tractor with a 12 h.p. Briggs engine bought originally in about 1992. I try to keep it running in memory of my dad. It uses a little oil and had been running o.k., but now when I shut it off, it makes a clanging sound and it wheezes when it stops. I'm guessing it could be something with the valves. Any ideas?

OHV or a flathead?

I don't know if OHV or flathead. I don't have the engine here to look at.

Watch the engine while this happens. See if the engine's mounting bolts are loose.

Good idea. I've had that happen before when some inexperienced mechanics reassembled it.
