so i have this briggs and straton model 23. it was fully operation about 2 years ago. this fall i tryed starting it up and theres no spark. got a new spark plug still nothing.pulled the flywheel off bought a new ignition coil.(used the core form the old coil cuz i cant find a new core anywhere) still no spark so i think that maby the core is bad? any ideas.i did some reaserch i couldnt find much. is the core supsoe to be magnetic also? or maby kno where i can find a new core? im not so firmilliar with the older engines. thank you

If its a 1953 I would say it has Ignition points and condenser. Best bet would be replace them or to the very lease clean the points. Also the point gap sets the timing.
Yes the points would be under the flywheel. If there isn't any points and this is a 1953 engine someone had to remove them? The only other thing I can think of is someone changed this over to a more modern pointless system? If this engine was made in 1953 it had points and condense at one time unless its something I have never come across.
can u please post a photo once u get the flywheel off ..As stated above I would check the points and condenser ...I just had and old briigs come in and the condenser was bad ...I was lucky I had a few old stock items in a box and was able to fix it ...I have also seen people put a magnetron ing system on them and do away with the points ...Show us what u got then we might be able to help u better
yes correct opps I was thinking Tecumseh just did one of them also ...Yes its down under muffler on a Briggs on side of block,,,To much stuff on the brain :confused2:
