lx255 john deere; Engine stops when pto is engaged.

It was mowing fine. Today I started the tractor, depressed the pto and the engine quit. Cannot get the pto to turn on. Tested the pto switch. it was fine. double checked the seat switch, it was fine. Has new battery with 400 some cranking amps. Nothing stuck under the mower or in the belt. Blades turn easy by hand. Thought it might be the clutch, but do not know how to test it for sure. I can not think of anything else it could be that would affect the pto. If I start moving in reverse, then pull up on the switch as if to mow in reverse, the tractor keeps running, and moving, but the pto will not engage.
