why wont the valves stay adjusted on an 18.5 briggs

Combination of camshaft lobe wear, push rod tip wear, rocker pivot wear and other things that change due to heating and cooling of the engine.

Long term, as above. Short term, rocker arm loose in head casting. Adusting mechanism not properly locked.
