Have had numerous problems with this mower since day one. Had to replace the engine a couple years ago. Briggs & Stratton engines may have once been a good engine, but they are junk now. Found out it was not rated the horsepower they said it was and put too much strain on the engine. Rated 19 hp with 42 inch deck. We have less than 3/4 acre to mow so don't think that there is that much strain on the engine.
When we first got it, it smoked like crazy and dealer took it back to the shop. Said the smoke was from breaking it in the first time. What a joke that was! Using it the other day and clutch fell off it. Put it back on securing the bolts, etc. and it fell off again. No signs as to why it fell off. Any suggestions to resolving this problem as I don't care to have to purchase another lawn mower as I'm retired and planning to downsize.

Rich,

Just cause you had a bad experience with an obviously dud dealer don't go writing off an entire brand or very shortly the only option will be to buy a flock of goats.
Mower companies work out the power demand of the mower then fit an engine rated at 125% of that requirement.
As for actual Hp vs the advertised Hp none of them are correct and all are some what optomistic .The regulated standard requires any mower tested ( and they do get tested ) to reach 85% of the rated power.

Having said that 14 Hp will happily drive a 42" deck, just so long as you don't want to mow at speeds that would give you pole position at Daytona.

Now down to your mower.
The clutch is held in place by a single bolt running up the middle of the mower shaft.
There is some sort of retainer to prevent it spinning.
The clutch is held together by 3 bolts or rivets or a rolled over edge.

So what exactly is falling off ?
What mower are we talking about ?
