I agree. I went on the Honda parts website the other day, a new hydrostatic trans is a little over $300 compared to a gear driven tranny for $59. As much as I may like a hydrostatic, I'm going with the gear driven one.
I'm just trying to get some estimated tranny repair costs for a Honda HRX217HYA (hydrostatic) lawnmower and a repair cost for Honda HRX217VYA (gear driven) lawnmower if one or the other was taken to an authorized Honda repair service.

Thanks. I have another month to decide whether a hydrostatic transmission is the way to go or not. Currently, I'm still leaning towards the hydrostatic, I realize the repairs are quite a bit higher but if I get a few years without any issues in this drive train, it may be worth it.

My current one which will be replaced with the Honda HRX217HYA mower, is a Ariens Razor with blade brake and one lever deck adjustment purchased 5 or 6 years ago, damn good mower when the drive works properly. I'm on my 3rd tranny with this one which once again showing classic symptoms...
