    Open Positive? *Update*

Well, as of yet, I have not had to recharge the battery. Last summer I couldn't go 2 weeks without the battery dying. Having said that, this weekend the mower probably won't start. We shall see. Thanks again for the help.

    Open Positive? *Update*

Agree. Making progress. At least now I know what's where and can assume that parts are in proper working condition. Glad I got it cleaned out under the flywheel if nothing else. Will start the testing process over at some point. For now, I'll keep charging the battery after each use. Will...

    Open Positive? *Update*

So I put the fuse in. Started right up. Put the shroud back on, fuse blows. Take the shroud off, change fuse, starts right up. Though maybe one of the bolts was grounding it out or something. Lay the shroud on while running, fuse blows. Figured out that where the carb is connecting to the...

    Open Positive? *Update*

Have no idea what 12/15 half wave amp means. Did try a 15A and it blew right away.

    Open Positive? *Update*

I appreciate people like you taking time to help out. I like learning about how things work. Just don't know enough to know how to troubleshoot nor have enough time under the hood, so to speak, to think to check oddball stuff like broken terminals. Appreciate guys-in-the-know being patient as...

    Open Positive? *Update*

I probably should have started there and checked to see if that was the only issue. As I said, easy for me to get in over my head. I like wrenching though and I know enough to get me in trouble. Any thoughts on the fuse? A point in a direction might help me in my research.

    Open Positive? *Update*

Bought a straight from China stator/rectifier/spark plug kit. Also bought a Kohler harness. Stator and flywheel were packed full of debris. Numbers seemed to be good after replacing everything. Won't believe it until the battery stays charged. However, after starting it a number of times...

    Open Positive? *Update*

This might be why I couldn't get any readings on my multimeter.

    Open Positive? *Update*

I'll give it a try in the key on position. If I have to start running wires, I'll have to rethink some things. The rectifier is terminal side down and the plug wire is very short. Hard to work in that space. Nice of the engineers to do it that way. Probably get back to it next weekend...

    Open Positive? *Update*

OK. Hooked everything back up. Placed red probe on center terminal (B+?) of the rectifier. Black probe on housing of rectifier. No voltage reading. Also tried red on terminal, black on N post of the battery. No reading. Red on P post, black on housing gives battery voltage, 12.7ish...

    Open Positive? *Update*

Part of me is tempted to just replace the wiring harness altogether. But I've learned that it's easy for me to get in over my head on things. Step at a time.

    Open Positive? *Update*

This is where I started my testing but couldn't get any readings off of it which led me to believe there is an open positive. I realized last night in bed that after I unscrewed it from its bracket so I could see it better, it probably was not grounded anymore. Also was reminded that I'm an...

    Open Positive? *Update*

Have a Kohler SV710-3036 on a Cub Cadet Z-Force 46 (2011ish?). Battery will not recharge. Went to YouTube University. I think I have an Open Positive. I don't know what that means. Will someone who knows more than I do please educate me on this? Let me ask some questions? Thanks.

    Fixed it too good?

So I installed a kill switch and it works like it should. Might not be the prettiest set up but it does the trick. Thank you so much for helping me out. Something neat about this project. My wife and I are foster parents. We just had a 16 year old move in with us recently. He is interested...

    Hey Folks

I use this site when I have a problem. I appreciate the sage advice given. I value learning and have learned quite a bit about small engines over the years, mostly so I can keep my equipment running at minimal cost. I enjoy working with tools and the satisfaction of being able to fix...

    Fixed it too good?

The Green wire goes from the coil to the connector in the third picture. It either dead ends there or goes on to the right side of the solenoid as a red wire. If it dead ends, do I need to run a wire from it to a switch to the frame? Do I need to ground the green wire out of the coil to kill...

    Fixed it too good?

OK, here's what I have: 1. Coil with green wire coming out going into the black wire protector along with a red wire 2. The green and red wire 3. G and R wires into a connector. Red wire out to solenoid 4. R wire connects to right side of solenoid Green wire out of right side of solenoid...

    Fixed it too good?

I don't believe so. I will check next time I'm at that property. I removed the battery after it died and took the bracket off along with the battery cables. Have just been pull starting it. FIL passed in 2003 and all I can ever remember is shutting it off by decreasing the throttle. He...

    Fixed it too good?

Sorry it took so long. I have not touched the throttle control other than to tighten it a bit at the throttle lever on the handle.

    Fixed it too good?

I have a Troy-Bilt Horse tiller I from 1975 left to me from my father-in-law. It has an HM80 on it. Whenever I wanted to shut it off, I would throttle it down and it would die out. Just cleaned and rebuilt the carb. Now when I throttle down it just idles slowly. I'm having to choke it out...

    Need Re-wiring Help

Thank you for the advice. I do not know the instructor. I just took a chance at calling the local career tech school to see if I could get some help. I'll look into the toggle switch.

    Need Re-wiring Help

Like I said, I'm doing this to help my sister's friend and am learning a lot plus it's fun to work on stuff. But I am an amateur with no training and with knowledge only through experience (obviously none on wiring systems). I've posted the info I was able to dig up on my own. I'm reaching...

So should I move the fuel solenoid from the positive side of the starter solenoid to the switched side of the starter solenoid?

    Need Re-wiring Help

Could the fuel solenoid be draining the battery since it would be always on? If I move the fuel solenoid to the other side of the starter solenoid, would that cause a problem?

    Need Re-wiring Help

I gave the mower back so no photos available. She told me engine is dead. Gets no response when she turns the key. No engine make or model as it is a clone engine. Mower is a Series 9 RER Snapper. Diagram shows exactly how I wired it with where I connected wires.

    Need Re-wiring Help

Put a clone engine on a rear engine Snapper for my sister's friend. Small engine instructor at the local career tech ok'd my wiring (see diagram). Mower started and ran. Now it won't start. Did I do it wrong? I am a novice. Speak slowly when replying. No big words. Thanks.

    Governor/Throttle Mystery

Contacted the local career center to see if they could help. The power equipment instructor lives in my town. He was able to stop by. He could not adjust it either. Seemed to think the carb was bad (80%) vs something internal (20%). Kind of made me feel better that it wasn't me. Cleaned the...

    Governor/Throttle Mystery

I have enough experience to get into trouble. Not enough to get out of it apparently. Set both carb needles to factory. Warmed the engine 3-5 minutes. Adjusted main jet on the bowl while at full throttle. Can get it to shut off when tightened. No difference in sound when opened up. Going...

    Governor/Throttle Mystery

Have followed the manual for adjustments. Everything moves easily. Rebuilt and cleaned the carb in the ultrasonic. Can't make heads or tails of it. Carb adjustments should not cause it to not to idle down, correct?

    Governor/Throttle Mystery

Have a TVXL195. Engine runs but I cannot adjust the RPMs with any noticable difference. High setting sounds the same as low. Mower loses power under load. Have tried to adjust the governor lever, and both high and low speed adjustment screws. Sometimes the motor will rev up when I move the...
