Probably off-target: I installed Gator G5 blades on a Troy-Bilt 42" mid-season in 2023 and for the first time ever at the end of the season the bottom of the deck was clean. It almost looked bead blasted.
I rolled my Toro 30" rear engine rider one time on the hill alongside my driveway. No injuries or damage. I replaced that with a Troy-Bilt 42: tractor and never had an issue. I never measured the hill so it really does not help the discussion. I had the hill reduced when the landscaping crew was...
I know nothing about the engine, but do want to say that I am incredibly impressed by the shop owners who take the time to read about people's plights and offer great suggestions and information.
Did you use the generator to provide electricity to the power washer to wash something else or did you pressure wash the generator while the generator was running? Two very different scenarios.
Just an FYI, many antique car owners have found that many of the Chinese repro parts are junk. Usually it is better to rebuild with a quality kit than buy new junk.
I am curious about your mowing of the ex-horse pasture. The OP mentioned hoof pits. Is your pasture smooth enough to mow comfortably? It sounds crazy, but would it be any advantage to have the pasture rolled to smooth it out? I'm a village kid so be easy on me.
Safety switches could have been defeated by the previous owner. I "fixed" the seat switch on my Husqvarna YT42LS tractor so the engine will keep running when I get off the seat. Was a real pain having the engine stop when I went to close the garage door. The engine continues to run with the PTO...
I am glad it is running fine. Probably a good idea to clean the fuel system whenever you buy a used mower. Ethanol gas can cause a lot of damage. Some people report using it for 15 years with no issues. Many people cannot start their mowers in the spring with ethanol gas left in the tank over...

Crap parts from China is a curse for antique cars. It is hard to find electrical parts worth anything. Brake wheel cylinders can come with holes drilled wrong so that brake fluid cannot get to the output. And on and on. If you have the choice of China or somewhere else, choose somewhere else...
My Husqvarna parts department said that Kawasaki recommends (in 2023) their 10W-30 synthetic blend that has zinc for the FR series V-twin in my YT42LS tractor. I believe that it was less than $5 per quart when I bought it at the dealer in 2023.
Why not call some lawn services and ask if they can add your lawn mid-season? After all, you said you planned to do that next year. Spend the money on someone else mowing your lawn instead of trying to fix whatever is broken. You could spend a month screwing with the engine and you still might...
Can you access both ends of the crank? Valves move because you are turning the crank at the end with the drive gear for the cam. I would guess that the other end of the crank does not turn when you turn the end that you are turning. I know nothing about lawn mower engines, but that is my theory...
Little Fish, Too many pages for me to read again, too few remaining brain cells to remember.
Did you get the mess cut down? Are the waterlogged lawn and tall grass issues annual? How deep into the year do they remain? Do they reoccur during the summer with heavy rain? Do neighbors have the same...
Chuckers has the best post in all 6 pages.
Forget about engine HP and Torque. I don't recall if you have a push or self-propelled mower. My discussion is for a push mower. You need to raise the deck to cut tall grass. The top of the deck should be equal to or lower than the grass height. I can...
I bought Ridgid battery operated tools because the batteries and tools have a lifetime warranty. I had a hassle with a local service shop replacing batteries on my first Ridgid cordless drill. It had my kit for four weeks when I finally called customer service and a very sympathetic employee...
1. It would be good if Admin could request that the posting form include a statement listing all the required information. Better still would be boxes for the info with the poster receiving a warning if the boxes are left blank.
2. I don't know much other than what I have experienced. My 1940...
I cannot find this spring on the parts breakdown. It is connected to the speed control arm ("gas pedal"), but I cannot figure out where the rusted off end connected. It would make sense if it were a retractor spring, but I think the other end would then have to go up into the area above the...
There will not be any choice as states outlaw the sales of new small gasoline ICEs over the next few years.
I bought one battery operated lawn and garden tool because I did not want another gasoline engine to deal with. It is not high use and I bought a small blower that uses the same battery...
I did not read all the posts, but make sure you look at turning radius for all of the riders/tractors you consider. I went from a Toro rider with a turning radius of a pickup truck to a TroyBilt tractor with the turning radius of a sports car. It made a big difference in mowing patterns. My...
Charlie, I once had hydro lock on my Troy-Bilt tractor from gasoline. I could not get the seat for the needle valve out to replace it so just installed a valve between the gas tank and carb. Have not had a problem since and the engine does not seem to use more gasoline than it did before.
The...
I put a set of Oregon 598-629 Gator G5 blades on my 42" Troy-Bilt deck in June after scraping the deck and lubing the spindles. I lifted the tractor in November to remove the blades to sharpen over the winter and found absolutely nothing, including paint, on the bottom of the deck. It looked...
From your original post: "According to the owner's manual, the engine should be run at the fast setting of the throttle, a/k/a full throttle, wide open." Period. End of answer. That is all you need to know. <You should apply for a job with Cub Cadet (MTD?) if you think you know more than the...
Texas Chainsaw, Have you looked for a Lexmark printer for home use since Windows 10 came out? They don't exist and there is no Windows 10 driver for them. Just saying. It is too bad because I liked my Lexmark printer until I upgraded to Windows 10 and had to buy a new printer.
Someone mentioned tranny/acetone mix. It is a 50/50 mix of ATF (automatic transmission fluid) and acetone. I read a comparison test of that mix and retail penetrating fluids. The 50/50 mix was far better than the purchased products. You would have to turn the tractor on its side (draining all...
Eagle86801, did the gas shutoff valve help? That was my solution on a Troy-Bilt tractor with a B&S engine some years ago. It lookd easier than pulling the carb. It works every time that I turn the valve off. One time I forgot and removed the spark plug to let out the gas by cranking the engine...
The first two sentences in the original post: I bought a brand new Briggs Intek twin 656cc 20hp. Swapped it onto my 1987 John Deere SX95 rear engine.
2000J25SP: Where did you buy the brand new engine? Did you contact the seller or Briggs about service or replacement? Why are you trying to fix it...
I have a YT42LS with a 42" snow thrower attachment. To set the belt tension on the long snow thrower drive belt the owners manual says to pull out tension chains until the inner hairpin clip stops the chain. Then you insert the outer hairpin clip. Mine does not have inner hairpin clips. If...
I bought a Husqvarna YT42LS with a 42" snowthrower (45-05082-669) last year. Once I had enough weight (two sets of Husqvarna weights) on the back it did quite well. I have an issue when approaching the road. The blower chute adjusts just 90 degrees to each side and blows snow slightly forward...
I have a 25 year old Toro rider, a TroyBilt tractor, an ancient Homelite/Jacobsen mulching mower, Sears wheeled string trimmer, Echo string trimmer, and a Toro power handle that brings me to the forum.
