    Oil, oil everywhere.

The seal behind the PTO on my 1440 Cub seems to have expired. I now have oil all over the front end of the motor. Is there anything tricky I need to consider when replacing this seal? Best, Jack

    Steering me wrong

New bushing all installed. Got it from my local mom and pop Cub Cadet dealer, not a big box store. I’ve dealt with them forever. Exact part. Fits perfectly. Their employee said they have a big demand for this item. The opening in the old part looked more oval than round! LOL!! Steering now...

    Steering me wrong

Folks, My wife mows with a Cub Cadet LTX 1046VT. ( I get the old 1440!) Well, recently the steering on her rig started to slip. The gears weren’t meshing. I removed the deck and looked at the pinion and sector gears, and the pinion gear teeth looked a bit worn. So, I replaced the pinion gear...

    Chugga-chugga-chugga

O.K.,….everything was clear, but the breather tube was cracked, ordering a replacement. On a lighter note, the right hand spark plug boot wasn’t pushed all the way down on the spark plug. Came back from the repair guy that way. Couldn’t see it until I took the side covers off to check the plug...

    Chugga-chugga-chugga

Thanks, again. I‘ll try the breather assembly. If it looks like it’ll require engine removal I may ship it out. I’ve always done my own repairs, but I’m not getting any younger. Best, Jack

    Chugga-chugga-chugga

Folks, Last fall I was mowing normally with my old ‘92, 1440 Cub, when she suddenly started blowing white smoke and bogging down. Upon examination the air cleaner was wet with oil, so I was concerned that something major had let go. Our local small engine expert owed me one, so I asked him to...

    Need a good trim

Did that last week. All clean now. I’ll check the diaphragm for flexibility. Or, I may just replace the carburetor.

    Need a good trim

Does this diaphragm fail the test?

    Need a good trim

Yes, 4 stroker. Changed the oil in the sump. Tore carb down, cleaned/reamed out everything. No change. Not sure how to tell if diaprams are stiff or passages are blocked. If so, would it start normally or run at idle? But, yes…I think a new carb is in the offing. Thanks for the help!

    Need a good trim

Folks, I have a Craftsman Model#316796170, gas trimmer, pole saw, tiller combo device, from circa 2006. The machine will start normally, it will run at about 1/2 throttle, but it stalls when the trigger is pulled to wide open. I noticed that the gas line was rotten, so I replaced it. I also...

    Feeling fuelish

Shot it with carb cleaner this am. After about the fifth shot it continued to run. Squirted it a few more times while running, then I shut it down and put it back together. Started up again normally. Going to add some Sta-BIL carb cleaner to the gas. But, I think it’s good to go. Thanks for all...

    Feeling fuelish

Update: Went out this am, turned key...heard very faint click every time ignition was engaged. Is this the solenoid in question? The cylinders are not getting fuel. Could the main jet be plugged? In the am I’m going to try the carb cleaner suggestion to see if I can keep it running. I’m also...

    Feeling fuelish

Installed new plugs. Didn’t expect that it was a cure, but it needed them. Tried a start. No. Shot it with starter fluid. Ran for about three seconds, then died. Checked plugs. Bone dry. But, the line squirts gas if I disconnect it from the carb and crank the engine. Just to be certain,...if it...

    Feeling fuelish

O.K., gas line disconnected from carb, engine cranked....fuel spurts from line. Not the pump. Plugs look pretty beat. Going to replace them first. How likely is it that the machine would start, run, move on ether if the shear key is the issue? Would the blades stalling in high grass cause...

    Feeling fuelish

The mower ran long enough on ether that it allowed me to back it up a few feet out of the thick grass. So, I’m hoping it isn’t the shear key. Hoping. I’ll pull the gas line from the carb later and see if it pumps fuel when cranked. I have my fingers crossed that it’s just the pump. Although, the...

    Feeling fuelish

Folks, While mowing today my 1440 suddenly died in heavy grass. I had the deck raised quite a bit to avoid clogging, and this was a section I had mowed many times. So, I was surprised that the mower quit on me. Upon inspection it developed that one of the mower deck lift arm cotter pins had gone...

    Old 1440 won’t crank

Follow up. Maybe the solution? I figured I’d look at the brake switch. Discovered that the brake switch lever had partially broken from its mount. It wasn’t completely depressing the switch. But, like the ignition switch, this part is very different physically from the OEM replacement. Oh...

    Old 1440 won’t crank

Folks, The return of the village idiot. I just came in, did not see the most recent replies prior. Sorry. Thank you for the wiring schematic and all the directions. As soon as I get my MIL’s dryer bearing replaced I’ll study what you sent. Hopefully within the hour. I do believe I’ve found my...

    Old 1440 won’t crank

O.K., and so this is why I don’t do Farcebook, or Instacram, or Snapcrap. Next somebody will be body shaming, or picking on my ethnicity. As a refresher,....I don’t do this for a living. I have no idea what a two pole switch is, but I’m SAS gonna find out. Likewise, as to the switch. To the best...

    Old 1440 won’t crank

Bert/Rivets, Thanks. Question....in the image I attached I can clearly see S, but I don’t see B? Or, am I mistaken? Can you tell me what the other letters represent? Next, I need a clarification. This am I plugged the ignition switch back in. I then turned the key to the run position. The lights...

    Old 1440 won’t crank

Rivets, first I want to thank you, Bert, Hammer and PT for the assistance. I’ve utilized this forum several times before with issues related to this mower and every time the problem has been solved. Obviously, I don’t do this for a living. But, I don’t mind learning, either. To answer your...

    Old 1440 won’t crank

Yes, I understand. Is there something in Rivets original checklist that I didn’t adequately answer? So, if I connect switch tab B to S, and the key is in the Start position, the starter should spin and the mower should start? Here is what I have.....

    Old 1440 won’t crank

O.K., if the ignition switch is in the run position and I flip the PTO switch I can hear the PTO engage and disengage, the seat switch is bypassed. I have not checked the brake switch, but if I depress the pedal the warning light about depressing the pedal in order to start goes off. is there...

    Old 1440 won’t crank

Sorry, Rivets....yes. 1.) fuse was fine, but I put a new one in anyway 2.) power from the battery to the solenoid is as it should be, about 12.5v 3.) there is no power to the small positive lead on the solenoid with brake depressed and key turned to start position 4.) there is no power to the...

    Old 1440 won’t crank

Sorry. Work got in the way. As of today, new starter and solenoid. If I jump the solenoid the starter will crank the engine. But, the starter will not engage using the key. If I turn the key the oil light will come on, the headlights work, and the PTO will click on and off. If I turn the key to...

    Old 1440 won’t crank

I removed the starter yesterday and tried an external battery. Sparks everywhere. So, I ordered an OEM replacement. The current item was obtained from a local (and highly regarded) mower repair shop. I never looked at the labeling when I installed it, but now I see that it probably should have...

    Old 1440 won’t crank

Folks, The battery is excellent. It’s almost new and kept on a minder. What concerns me is that I jumped the two main positive terminals on the solenoid with a screw driver, like we used to do on cars back in the day. It pr@ctically melted the screwdriver. Short somewhere? I was going to isolate...

    Old 1440 won’t crank

Folks, Back in about 1996 I inherited my father’s 1440 Cub rider with mower deck and blower. This machine is built like a tank, and has been a real help as a mowing backup and driveway cleaner in the winter. Over the years I’ve replaced the PTO, alternator and two years ago the starter. Last...

    Down and out

Folks, In July my 1992, 1440 quit. It developed that the issue was a bad alternator. That was replaced, and the mower again ran like new...until Tuesday. I had been mowing for about 10 minutes when it just sputtered and quit. I tried cranking it over about 4-5 times, and on the last attempt it...

    Dead Right There

Folks, I have a model 1440 garden tractor that was my father’s. Up until last week there was never an issue. Still started first crank, never used a drop of oil. Just basic maintenance. We have a newer LTX 1046VT now for the main mower, but the old Cub still works great for a backup. And, I have...

    '92 1440 Starting Issue

Folks, I have a 1992 Cub Cadet lawn tractor that I use primarily for snow removal. My only problem is that it has begun to start really hard. Yet, once it starts it runs like new. Looks like it, too. The battery is new. But, when I crank it over it behaves as if the battery is dead. It will...
