I got the starter situation figured out. I'm guessing a hot wire was touching bare metal when I put the starter down to bolt it in. But now, it's doing what it did before which led me to believe it was the starter. I hit the key and the starter gear bumps over and that's it. Does that each time...

That's how I had it. And the battery negative got real hot. So unless I have a positive touching a ground somewhere, I'm kind of lost.
