What was the outcome? Not likely that both cylinders would suddenly have valves so far out of adjustment, that engine would not start. Engine will start and run quite happily on one cylinder. Walt Conner

You didn't say what, if any, affect adding choke had. Also, you didn't say if you visually checked if the vent hole in gasket lined up with carb vent hole. Walt Conner

I doubt it would cost all that much more when they already had the equipment and the one item verses inventorying 4 different items to make a segmented camshaft. The big savings was having it made in China with Chinese quality. Walt Conner

Actually sounds to me like too much clearance on right Intake valve. It is possible that the Intake camshaft valve cam lobe is worn excessively causing it to not release compression, but these are one pc forged camshaft and in working on dozens of these, I have never found one worn to the point...

You did clean any carbon from the cylinder head? IF you just want to get the engine running and not have to buy a different mower, install two head gaskets on the right cylinder. This will lower the compression, perhaps enough for engine to spin over and start. Not something I would do, I would...

You are talking about the wrong series of engine, your note does not apply to this engine. Also, I can positively assure you that there is a permanent fix for the engine series valve guides you reference, I developed one and there are others. Walt Conner

May be big enough but I would still stay away from it. Remember he is running the engine on starting fluid and it is probably 25 years old or more, we don't have the code numbers nor the model number, could be a 42 or 46 series. Lots of newer used engines and crippled complete mowers out there...

Follow up, Yes, notch in piston towards flywheel. Important, I see you removed the rods from pistons, check manual for oil hole orientation to camshaft. You mentioned washers with the oil seals, I didn't see that but likely spacers for adjusting end play IF needed. Walt Conner

Well cylinder ridge is caused because that is where the rings stop traveling up the cylinder. Measure the ring gap at the top of ring travel and at the bottom of ring travel. Rings do not travel to bottom of bore, only the piston skirt does. I almost always use .010" oversize rings hand fitting...

Suggest you disconnect both kill wires at base of each coil. If I understand you correctly, disconnecting where you have does no good. Walt Conner
