OK, thank you all for your advice, replies, etc. After much careful thought and consideration I decided to just keep on turning the engine counterclockwise. I’m blocking the air intake as I start the engine. It’s an extra one minute from my lawn mowing, but it’s less stress. Thank you.

Pulled deck off my Troy bilt pony lawn tractor. Put on new belt and pulley and spindles and pulley guards. Put deck back on and now the front is down low, even at highest cut. I assume I need to adjust the front rod adjustment, but why? I didn’t change anything.

OK, so I got the terminology wrong, I’m sorry. Yes I’m talking about that large gear with the lobe on it that takes the compression away while the engine is cranking.

So how difficult is it for a reasonably talented person to take the engine apart and change the compression valve?

Just a real late update because I forgot all about this forum, sorry lol. Yes it was the decompressor on the camshaft which is bad. I haven’t changed it yet, but I have learned how to spend the engine backwards until it stops, then cover the air intake, then crank the engine till it spins freely...

Thank you all for your informed information. That sounds like something that is beyond my mechanical ability. Is this something that a lawnmower repair person is going to have to do. And is it going be so expensive that it’s not worth it?
