I finally fixed it ... Life hasn't been the same since

Some of you may recall how I have a B&S 24HP V-twin that's ALWAYS been hard to start and long story short I did EVERYTHING to fix that (and the engine popping) issue. Well the whole story (that lasted well over 3 years) will send you to sleep (and numb my fingertips on this keyboard) but it...

    Absolutely.

Briggs intek v twin starts hard

Do you see any side effects from doing this?.... It kinda suggest there's a design flaw (like the plastic manifold) in B&S design specifications.

Briggs intek v twin starts hard

No my carb has separate choke and throttle leavers and cables. I threw away the plastic manifold (which was leaking somewhere!!) and bought an aluminium manifold, which is used on the professional series engines.... This took a bit of adaptation but worked well for me ;-)

Briggs intek v twin starts hard

Ok thanks for clarify that. I'll consider doing the same but I'm a bit reluctant because I've never had that engine idling and running as sweet as it does at the moment ... so might "let sleeping dog lay" lol! Thanks for all the information ... You've done really well in such a short space of...

Great news! Some say that those two jets are different sizes. Do you know which one you drilled out?

Great ... But you mean "choke plate" right? .... please report back after that one ... and what you covered the hole it with too? Good luck!

Briggs intek v twin starts hard

Brass plug is what I've always had ... except when I fitted the Chinese Carb (for a few days) which has a plastic/nylon plug. So either one was "no change" Compression test yes, many times ... But I can't see how a leak down issue would help with a starting problem? ... That's really an optimal...

Briggs intek v twin starts hard

My Carb has the brass plug. As always in life, there's no such think as "EVERYTHING! lol" ... So I've not tried blocking a hole on the choke plate (if there is one?) .... Would love to know if this mod alone does the trick?... But not how you would do this without something being sucked into...

Briggs intek v twin starts hard

Check and Tested mine (many times) and its working fine.... I'm fairly sure I saw replacements on eBay? .... But need to make sure you're get the right one as the Solenoids on the Chinese Carbs are different (screw thread and plug) to the Nikki Cabs.

Briggs intek v twin starts hard

Regrettably not...The current (original) carb has been stripped down and cleaned out maybe 10 times (with every jet and venturi check and cleared each time) and the last time was with a full carb overhaul kit. I have also fitted brand new carb which did nothing to solve this problem. Also since...

Briggs intek v twin starts hard

I have the same engine. And I have done EVERYTHING!! but only more recently discovered that a change in starting procedure works well for me. 1.Battery in good order and well charged .... otherwise don't bother 2.Don't not apply choke (at first). 3.Crank engine over (with starter motor) for upto...

Would love to do a mod like this... But I'm guessing the manifold adaptation would be a nightmare.

More useful than an hour meter!

Just search for "Dual Digital Thermometer" on eBay and loads of them come up. There's two prob wires and one 12vDC power wire. For DC power you can tap into the same two wires that the hour meter uses.... too easy! For the Tranny probe...measure the wiring route on your mower to the Tranny...

More useful than an hour meter!

I've just replaced my hour meter with a twin temperature gauge. The top temp is engine oil and the bottom temp is Transaxle. Now I don't have to worry about over working either   All the best. Neo

    24HP V-Twin B&S - Fault driving me CRAZY!

Ok I've spent all day working in the B&S. Took the sump cover off and here's what I've observed ... There appears to be no pumped oil that goes into the Cylinder Head Chamber (CHC). There's two large holes above and below the tappets (I can fit my little finger in it) that allows oil to be...

    24HP V-Twin B&S - Fault driving me CRAZY!

Ok, I've been away for a few weeks but the new inlet valve was in the mailbox when I got home. Fitted it and put everything back together. During reassembly I notice there was no oil residue in in No.2 Cylinder Head. Crossed checked that with No.1 Cylinder Head which had a fair amount of oil...

    24HP V-Twin B&S - Fault driving me CRAZY!

Yep that's true. My one is seeping a little so if the rubber seal comes with the Gasket kit I'll replace it ... I'm assuming it just pulls out? I took the crankshaft out today and have a cope of questions.... This looks like a chip to me? ... Or is it a feature? ... There are no marks on the...

    24HP V-Twin B&S - Fault driving me CRAZY!

Please tell me which photo and where you guys see the intake valve not sealing? .... Seats have definitely not moved. Yes they will be. Engine was running rich with old carb and still is with the new one too?? Corbon looks bad in photo but is quite thin and most of it is wiping out with a rag...

    24HP V-Twin B&S - Fault driving me CRAZY!

Yes I no it's not good but I did it to prove the point. Exactly same symptoms were there (well) before and after I used the sealer so in this case it had no effect either way. Here's some photos of both heads....

    24HP V-Twin B&S - Fault driving me CRAZY!

    24HP V-Twin B&S - Fault driving me CRAZY!

Hi Gents, Here's one to test your fault diagnostic skills on lol! I have a B&S 24HP V-Twin (Model 445677 - Family 6BSXS.7242VF) Which is a horizontal V with dual barrel carburetor. It start Ok and revs up Ok (a little hesitant) but when idles the anti-stall is always blipping the throttle...

    Crankshaft and Camshaft end play

Hi, Is there an easy way to measure the Crankshaft and Camshaft end play on a V-twin CV or CH Kohler Command? I'm assuming the cover needs to be replaced and removed each time I measure this but the Kohler Service manual does not say that and the cover it'self is quite hard to get on and off...

LA120 Drip, drip, drip and lime-scale/calcium

Hi Gents, I recently picked up an LA120 on the cheap and I'm slowly restoring it. I notice there was a lot of tacky dirt on one side of the engine so when I cleaned it all up and ran the engine for a short time oil started to drip from one of the sump bolts. But this only happens while the...

    Engine cover oleo to newer

Hi, Does anyone know if an engine cover (bonnet/hood) from a Toro WheelHorse 17/38 HXL can be made to fit the older 260-H series (268-H) mowers? The main issue I see is the length of the cover...is it long enough? The 260-H series has a shocking reputation for broken engine covers so I figured...

    non Electric PTO's for me!

Hi All, Just voicing a personal opinion here..... I have 4 lawn mowers (two with Electric PTO's and two without) and after using them all quite extensively I much prefer the way the two JD's 100 series (with manual cutting belt engagement). This is because I don't like the way the electric PTO...

B&S I/C engine Stator and flywheel

Hi all, My neighbour has an MTD Yard-machine which has a 13HP B&S I/C engine in it that has a buggered stator and flywheel. He's asked me to fix it for him but I need to get the parts on the cheap because he's a pensioner and I'm just doing the job as a favour for him. I keep seeing old...

Hi All, I managed to pick up a JD LA120 on the cheap because oil was poring out of the RH Tranny shaft....Turns out the shaft spacer had warn straight through the washer (between the wheel spacer and the case) allowing the wheel spacer push into the shaft seal, ripping it open. The mower was...

    Fix it or throw it???

Hi all, I recently picked up a cheap "for parts" mower with an 18HP Motor...Kohler Command V-Twin (CV18s) After close inspection I noticed the right hand piston did not move when I rotated the engine and there was a knock/clacking sound at one point in the rotation. So I took the head off...
