Intek 18 hp OHV- #31E777 0443 E1. Loud popping at higher RPM, under load, or hitting bumps(roots, etc.) Video under 1st Reply. Thanks for any input.

In one post, you mentioned puffs of black smoke. That is indicative of a carburetor problem. Why did you replace the carburetor and where did you get it? Did you save the OEM carburetor? I would be tempted to rebuild it or have someone rebuild it.

I don't know. I'd have to have the thing in front of me and even then may not be able to tell. I'm guessing some things got bent.

    That's quality right there

How could they have ground the valve seat off center? I've ground a few valve seats and the stone is guided by a collet-type tool that centers itself in the valve guide.

    That's quality right there

Is the valve guide that worn? Or does it even have guides, meaning the block is either severely worn or the hole for the valve stem was mislocated from day one?

    Fuel Treatment

Where is "around here?" Look on https://www.pure-gas.org/ for places that sell non-ethanol gas. The problem is, you're adding another chemical of unknown composition to cancel out an unwanted contaminant (ethanol). I'd rather just do without the ethanol in the first place, not try to...

    725d Lost steering. Help!!

I'm by no means a Grasshopper expert but it sounds like you lost hydraulic pressure. Is the deck raised hydraulically? If so, can you raise it? If you can't, that means the pump has failed or has become disconnected from its drive source. The 725D is a heavy duty zero turn with a horizontal...

    Burnt valve

The other symptom that seems to be overlooked is the fact that the valve cover was leaking oil "badly." That indicates (to me) that exhaust gas leaking past the valve stem is the problem.

    This one has me stumped

Did you fill the tank or just put in a little bit of gas? Did you replace the pickup tube and if so, how close is it to the bottom of the tank? What I'm wondering is if there isn't enough fuel in the tank and tipping the mower back covers the pickup with gas.

On swing cylinders, I suspect that the top of one cylinder is connected to the bottom of the other because you're pushing with one and pulling with the other.

    Jonsered Blade

It looks as if you've been mowing soupy mud. Mowers don't like that. If you want your mower to last a long time, the less of that you do, the higher your chances will be for a long-lived mower.

    Diesel starts then dies

Diesels need two things to run--enough compression to heat air above the ignition point of diesel fuel and a correctly timed injection of fuel. Barring an internal mechanical failure of valves, pistons, etc., compression will not be an issue, especially to an engine that was already running...

    GASOLINE VS DIESEL

I would take that article with a grain of salt. For instance: "Diesel mower saves 700 gallons of fuel every day, and it saves money for the long term. " and "Cummins engines have a displacement of 2.8 to 95 liters. " 700 gallons saved per day? It must be the 95 liter engine.

Testing Spark Plugs Using An Ohmmeter

I'm not. I never got the A&P or IA (inspector) license a real aircraft mechanic is required to have. I did a lot of work on airplanes, both other people's and my own, but all my work had to be inspected and signed off by an A&P or IA. That was during college and once I graduated, I moved...

Testing Spark Plugs Using An Ohmmeter

When I was in college, I worked PT for a guy who owned a fleet of WWII bombers, patrol planes, and freighters (Douglas A/B-26, Lockheed PV-2, R5D, and Douglas DC-7) used as air tankers. Most had either the P&W R2800 or R2000; the -7's had R3350's. IIRC, the bottom cylinders used dual wire...

    Blade cutting edge.

If you know how fast the mower travels and how fast the blades spin, you can figure out the 'advance ratio' aka how far the mower advances for each half revolution of the blade.
