Yeah, Rivets. Jerry pretty clearly had two separate problems. There's no way the spring being off filled the crankcase, but what you said about the cause of that issue makes perfect sense, especially if the gas tank isn't shut off.

I have nine Lawn-Boy 2-stroke mowers ranging from the 70's to the 90's. Every one has a factory fuel shutoff valve as part of the shroud. Are you sure yours doesn't already have a fuel shutoff valve built in?

Just to add what Hammermec said, you're saying it's with the choke on...on all the way or slightly off full choke? If it's running great with the choke slightly off from full, then I have seen this issue with a bad governor spring.

I'm thinking it's a float valve issue. Maybe when there's no vibration it can seal, but there's a sticky open spot you hit when there's vibration and movement while mowing. Have you looked inside the carburetor?

To answer the rest of your question: Do NOT try to take the tank apart! Getting it back together without it leaking would be nigh unto impossible, and a million times harder than cleaning it using any of the other guys suggestions.
