start using anti-seize. It will get everywhere, and a small can will last a lifetime. I use the aluminum color but some people elect for the copper.

not piling on. A simple volt ohm meter from your local Harbor Freight, or Amazon is the first thing you should buy rather than fire the parts cannon. You can have a bad part or a chewed wire. The parts cannon will bring on a great frustration if all you do is keep firing it.

my understanding is they are attached to the drain or tank valve. Usually they come with a new drain or drain valve and are screwed in, or sit in a neoprene grommet. Most of that stuff is on Amazon. If the sock is plugged, it could mean it is time to drain and clean the tank.
