I can't speak for new CC spindles with grease zerks but the old ones like I have are NOT sealed bearings. Each spindle has a pair of opposed tapered roller bearings and grease is fed to them via drilled passages in the shaft.

There are good reasons not the hit the end of the crankshaft. One is that you might break off the end of the crankshaft (I've personally done that).

Mike, you're absolutely correct about the issue being there in right or left turns for 3-blade mowers. But I also think the 270 degree turns also keeps the mower in grass that's already been mowed. The only way I see to keep that from happening would be to limit the turn radius of the mower...

I was replying to the OP. Sorry I didn't make that clear. I understand the budget thing but sometimes it ends up being false economy. It wouldn't cost the OP a dime to have a dealer take a look at his yard and make a recommendation.

You should consider a mower with a horizontal crankshaft engine. Vertical crankshaft engines don't have the deep sump that horizontals do and lose lubrication if tilted too much, especially if low on oil. Scag, Grasshopper and Kubota make mowers with horizontal shaft engines but they are not...

In one post, you mentioned puffs of black smoke. That is indicative of a carburetor problem. Why did you replace the carburetor and where did you get it? Did you save the OEM carburetor? I would be tempted to rebuild it or have someone rebuild it.

Looks to me like the pulleys are out of alignment.

How could they have ground the valve seat off center? I've ground a few valve seats and the stone is guided by a collet-type tool that centers itself in the valve guide.

Is the valve guide that worn? Or does it even have guides, meaning the block is either severely worn or the hole for the valve stem was mislocated from day one?

How old do you think gas is when you get it?

An electric powered robotic mower isn't going to have enough charge to mow the tiniest of cemeteries. Unless it's a two-grave family plot.

How much are you trying to take off? Reel mowers aren't meant to take off a lot.

The other symptom that seems to be overlooked is the fact that the valve cover was leaking oil "badly." That indicates (to me) that exhaust gas leaking past the valve stem is the problem.

If this engine is still under warranty (30 hours), I'd let the dealer take a look at it. If not, I'd remove that head and look at it myself.

Does the other exhaust valve look like this?

Do the spindles all have the same type and number of washers, spacers, etc. above the blades? Did the spindles get removed and replaced? Are the blades all the same thickness?

Try your old diaphragm or rob another one out of one of your kits.

Did you fill the tank or just put in a little bit of gas? Did you replace the pickup tube and if so, how close is it to the bottom of the tank? What I'm wondering is if there isn't enough fuel in the tank and tipping the mower back covers the pickup with gas.

If you have the repair manual, that's going to be your best source of information.

On swing cylinders, I suspect that the top of one cylinder is connected to the bottom of the other because you're pushing with one and pulling with the other.

During power outages, it doesn't matter how close you are to a gas station--it's too late to get gas.
