I checked today, and the price is $2K lower again. 🤷‍♂️

    GOODBYE TO ELECTRIC

You underestimate the cost of batteries. The Ryobi 80V 10AH batteries are $899 ea, and the 40V 12AH are $359 ea. The 54" mower uses 3 of the 80V and 4 of the 40V, Total replacement cost is $4133. Warranty is 5 yrs. Some here have reported Ryobi battery life of 3 yrs, some over 6 yrs. 5 yrs is a...

    GOODBYE TO ELECTRIC

Ok, you didn't totally ignore the other costs, but you focused on "fuel", which, to me, is the least significant cost. I estimate that it costs me $5 per mow. If that went to zero, that wouldn't affect my opinion on what I wanted. A $2000 price increase? Wow!

    GOODBYE TO ELECTRIC

Except you want to compare costs, and then use the one category ("fuel") that most favors electric over gas, while ignoring the biggest cost of electric... battery replacements. And really... operating costs aren't even a consideration to me. Whether it costs a few dollars or a few cents per mow...

17HP Command Pro (CV490S) Valve Adjustments

Does the 17HP Command Pro (CV490S) have hydraulic valves? Do the valves require periodic adjustment? I've searched, but I can't find the answer. I've searched YT, and there are zero videos showing a valve adjustment on this engine. The manual I found online mentions "Adjustable Valve Lash...

    GOODBYE TO ELECTRIC

I think we're seeing here another example of electric advocates overestimating the cost savings. $0.10/KWH? I paid $0.11/KWH 5 yrs ago, and I was getting mine from TVA, which has some of the cheapest electricity in the country. And $60 of diesel to mow 3 acres? That sounds high, too. Day-to-day...

    engine will not stay running

Remove the gas cap, and try again. If the vent on the cap is plugged, it will crank, but won't run long. If it has a choke, verify that it is on (closed) when the engine is off and cold. Verify that it is off (open) after the engine starts.

    Age old question, Winter Storage?

I have several Battery Tenders with these leads on various vehicles and equipment. I keep my mowers on BT's at all times. They only get cranked at most once a week. BT's are great.

Mower stops running after 15 minutes

When it does this, immediately loosen the gas cap, and try again. If it runs fine, the problem is a clogged tank vent.

    Engine fades away

I had a problem similar to this with a push mower. Turned out to be trash in the carb & fuel tank. I cleaned out the carb, but not the tank. Problem persisted. Then I cleaned out the carb again and the fuel tank. It's been running fine since.

    Tiny wire connectors.

I'm an electrical engineer, and used to work in Huntsville, AL at Cummings Research Park. There used to be several businesses in the area that supplied electrical components, but over time, they've all closed. The last one closed maybe 5 yrs ago. Even a place like Huntsville can't support an...

    Tire Pressure

Re: chalking video... if you REALLY want to find the best tire pressures for your vehicle (I doubt this would work on mowers), get a tread depth gauge. Then check your tread depth every 1000 miles. Inside, middle, and outside in 3 places on each tire. 9 measurements per tire. If the middle is...

MTD 20 inch Push Mower Hard to Crank when hot

Do you work on your own equipment? If so, try the following, and check operation after each step: - Check the blade brake and cable. Make sure the brake is not dragging when the engine is hot. If you reach under the mower, and turn the blade on a hot engine, first remove the spark plug wire. I...

MTD 20 inch Push Mower Hard to Crank when hot

Briggs 125cc engine? When this happens, is the deck clogged with grass? A deck clogged with grass could make the starter rope hard to pull. Are the cooling fins clear? Maybe the cooling fins are blocked, and the engine is overheating. Remove the engine shroud. The fins should be easy to check...

    CV490S Throttle & Governor Linkages

Never mind. Apparently I'm an idiot. I don't know what happened, but it's working now. I just went out to the garage. I was going to make a photo of the linkages to see if I could see what was wrong, and... it's working fine now. At least I think it is. I don't have it running yet. When I first...

    CV490S Throttle & Governor Linkages

I have a Husqvarna CZ 4817 Zero Turn Mower (968999220) with a Kohler Command CV490S. It has the common leaky carb problem, so I I'm taking a gamble on a cheap Amazon carb. However, as I'm putting it back together, I notice that the throttle is not wide open with the mower not running. I can move...

Anyone tried this.... Poor mans power steering.

My Cub Cadet Pro Z 100 S(teering wheel) is quite difficult to steer at low speeds on asphalt or concrete. The next model up (Pro Z 500) uses power steering. So there are situations where a mower can be difficult to steer.

RPM for a 22" residential push mower

Where is that in the spec sheet? I've never seen such a spec. The ANSI blade tip speed limit for a 22" blade puts the engine RPMs at 3299, so the optimum RPMs IMO should be near that.

    Continuous using air filter

Ok. I figured that any foam filter or pre-filter needed oil. In my fleet, I have two pre-filters and one foam filter. They all call for oil.

RPM for a 22" residential push mower

I thought I'd follow up on this. I did a little more troubleshooting with my cheap cone balancer, and found that it has too much play, and can't be relied on for accurate balancing. So that leaves the Oregon and its clones, or taking my blades to a shop. Years ago, I took some blades to a...

    Best for hills?

When I refer to "tractor configuration", I mean, engine up front, rear wheel drive, steerable front wheels, single transmission which may be geared or hydrostatic. I do NOT mean to infer that a Cub Cadet XT1 that you get at Home Depot is the same as a 100HP John Deere farm tractor.

    Best for hills?

And they're all quite expensive compared to the CC steering wheel ZTRs, at least the residential versions. The commercial CCs are similarly priced to those you linked to. Not sure about the others, but the Kubota GR has only one transmission, so the differential is open. It may have a diff lock...

Make or break features on a zero-turn?

Years ago, I wanted a Husqvarna Articulated Rider. One of the reasons I wanted one is the flip up deck, and the ability to mow under bushes. I'm kinda bummed that they're not longer available. I'd still get one if I ever come across one.
  31. G

    Best for hills?

Unless you have a ZTR with a steering wheel, which performs better, and is less dangerous on hills and slopes than a lap-bar ZTR or a lawn tractor. A lawn tractor will have more weight on the front, but that weight is higher than a ZTR. A steering wheel ZTR is the best of both. Low CoG, and...

    Cub cadet zero turn

My older ZTR is a Husqvarna. The newer one is a Cub Cadet. I can't imagine that MTD has been immune from lawsuits from idiots. The CC is a commercial unit. Maybe that matters?

    Cub cadet zero turn

That would explain things if ALL ZTRs had reverse safety switches, but only some do. I have two ZTRs. One is from around 2003, and one is a 2017 model. Neither have reverse safety switches.

Series 080000 engine reliability and out-of-gas symptoms

Yes, I know. But that still doesn't mean that it won't last if cared for. That's why I asked about it. I know some engines, like Inteks, can die even if cared for.

Series 080000 engine reliability and out-of-gas symptoms

I recently bought a cheap used Bolens 11A-020W765 mower with the 125cc Briggs 08P502-0165 engine, which has the plastic carb and foam air filter. I got it for trim work, but before I needed to use it for that, I needed to use it to mow a small yard. The first time I tried to mow with it, it ran...

    Cub cadet zero turn

Actually, now that you mention it... I DO remember a ZTR with reverse lockout. It was a Cub Cadet steering wheel ZTR. A Z Force model, I think. You could bypass it by hitting a sequence of buttons on the control panel, though. This was documented in the manual. It wasn't some hidden feature.
  38. G

    Best for hills?

If you have the diff lock engaged on a tractor, it will tear up the turf more than a ZTR. I DO agree that's it's unfortunate that steering wheel ZTRs are only available from Cub. I got lucky, and came across a good deal on a Pro Z 100 S, which is a commercial unit. The residential Cubs, as well...

    Cub cadet zero turn

Since this is really a discussion on safety switches, and not Cub cadet zero turn... Why do some riding mowers have a reverse safety switch, and others don't? My first riding mower was a MTD back in the 90's, which had a reverse safety switch. I disabled it, as it was a pain. I re-enabled it...
  40. G

    Best for hills?

A ZTR with a steering wheel is safer than a tractor. Lower CoG, and rear wheels are allowed to turn independently of each other, unlike on a tractor with a diff lock.
  41. G

    Best for hills?

I would consider a ZTR with a steering wheel. Unfortunately, that seems to lock you into Cub Cadet, as they're the only ones selling them. I have one because of the slopes I have to mow, and it does MUCH better on slopes than the lap-bar ZTR it replaced. It's better on slopes than a standard ZTR...

    Non ethanol fuel question

This part: If your evaluation of an engine's "turdness" is equated solely to HP, then, yes, OPE engines are turds. They don't put out NEAR the HP per liter of motorcycle engines. I evaluate engines on their suitability for the task. In that sense, OPE engines are just fine for the job they do...
  43. G

    Non ethanol fuel question

I disagree. I used to be "into motorcycles". Yes, they generate a LOT of power for their displacement, but they do it at 10000+ RPM's. OPE engines are typically rated at 3600 RPM. RPMs make all the difference. See what the sportbike engines produce at 3600. Also OPE engines are designed to...

I didn't know that you could get grease fittings with the right thread. Thanks. A 10 pack is only $8, and should take care of all my attachments. I started this thread because I'm having the same problem as mcspeed. My gear boxes are getting hot. Too hot to hold.

    Greasing trimmer head gearboxes

The problem is, that takes 3 hands. One to hold the grease gun to the grease port, one to work the gun, and one to rotate the trimmer head. Just had a thought... I bet a chainsaw bar greaser would work. That would only take one hand to apply the grease. Is that grease compatible with trimmer...

Make or break features on a zero-turn?

If you feel like you need ROPS and seat belts ALL the time... I would agree. I feel I need it about 10% of the time. The bank next to the road is part of that 10%, and I can't just let that go.
