Is it normal to see grease leakage on a self propelled mower transmission case?

My transmission part number is 589600601. On the shaft that the wheels connect to, I see evidence of grease on over half of the outside of the black case. I'm not sure what signs to look for that the transmission might be on its way out.

Sears 917370431 self-propelled lawn mower hard to pull start rope

Small world. I actually had my bail cable rust out and separate internally on both my mowers. I wonder if the bail cable that engages your self propelled belt isn't on it way out next.

Don't know where to adjust/check valve clearance on engine

Thanks a bunch. Once you explained what type of engine it is and where to look, I was able to locate a video where valve clearance is being checked on a older but similar model to get a visual idea of the process. Carb Still Leaking After Parts Replacement

I installed the valve seat with the ridged side facing the carb and the flat side facing the needle. Ohh I didn't know that was the distinction when testing. I wish there was more written about this. I did use an oem seat & needle however.

Carb Still Leaking After Parts Replacement

So I guess they just get to a point where they'll just act up no matter what? This isn't an aftermarket carb.

Carb Still Leaking After Parts Replacement

Engine model:123K02-0193-E1 Primer button type carb I've replaced the float, needle valve, and the needle valve seat using all B&S genuine parts. From bench testing everything looks great; I test that everything seals right on the bench by turning the carb upside down and drawing a 5psi vacuum...
