90's MTD mower front wheel bearings

Engine is out and will be cleaned (was not real dirty). Muffler is like new. Axles use split pins and spacer washers. Without the internal ferrule (tube spacer) external pressure cannot be applied to both inners by any method. As before, wheels are golng on "as is". I am over it. Pics to follow.

90's MTD mower front wheel bearings

Thanks, as mentioned in recent post, the problem is lack of a ferrule between the bearing inners so that a nut could tighten the whole show. The design is poor and there was an easy fix. Things are getting heated. Apologies for posting. Thought there may have been some interest in converting a...

90's MTD mower front wheel bearings

The problem could have been avoided by placing a ferrule on the shaft between inner and outer bearings and extending the shaft length, threading the end, and allow tightening with an axle nut.

Yes, a dab or two of Loctite or, thinking, some rubberised contact cement might make removal easier.

Thanks for that. They certainly looks similar enough to be a replacement. I will check the measurements and save those part numbers for future reference. ...... PS: These "heavy duty" ones appear close to the ones I have. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/201300889177?

90's MTD mower front wheel bearings

Has been sitting in a shed for 15 years, grease was bound to be dried out and sticky. Has sat since the deck became unfixable, and cost prohibitive, to replace. The mower was replaced with a commercial grade Kubota Zero turn. Not re-engineering a mower ... creating a cheap mobile, medium volume...

90's MTD mower front wheel bearings

Wheels were painted a few days ago. New tyres for the rear. One inner race is a bit sticky which I wiill free up before reassembly of the mower which was fully stripped down to clean off old oil and grease plus removal of the redundant deck hangers and levers. The front pressed metal...

90's MTD mower front wheel bearings

Had you asked for the information with the reason just posted then I would have willingly supplied it. The mower is a Canadian build, sold in Australia as a "WHITE". Model (I believe) is: 132-457E672 With additional numbering: 1 J20212-0149 Rear drive: Model ... 616-0077 S/I ... A 060136 ....

90's MTD mower front wheel bearings

Front wheels have a hub with (I believe) two ball races pressed into the hub's inner and outer sides as the witness marks show on the axle. The "inner" of each bearing has been slipping on the axle. Not the best design but built to a price. No longer losing sleep over it. :)

90's MTD mower front wheel bearings

Thanks guys. I guess the wear after 34 years is very minimal (1992 model). In it's new role as a mobile sprayer it will get even less work. As I am 80 years of age, the unit will outlast me. I tend to over think things sometimes. ......

90's MTD mower front wheel bearings

I am converting an old MTD/WHITE ride-on mower into a small (mobile) sprayer unit. The front wheel bearings on this mower are ball bearing type where the inner race (reasonably thinking) should not be turning on the axle, but held firmly. This is not possible due to the wheels held on only by...
