needle valve

when i remove the needle valve and spring for cleaning and then reinstall, it doesnt work right. what iam i doing wrong
 
pete - i put my head to the computer screen hoping it would tell me exactly what "doesn't work right" means, but nothing happened. Do you think you could be a little more specific about what is wrong? A needle is pretty basic. Before you start you slowly turn it in gently counting how many turns - easiest to do 1/2 - 1 - 1 1/2 - 2 - just under 2 1/2. Then write it down. Once the needle is removed and I am guessing some Berryman's B12 or Gumout carb spray was run into the hole? Then you screw it back in gently until it stops then count out the number of turns you wrote down to get it back to where it was. As a general rule only, if you didn't count the turns, set it to 2 1/2 from full in. Do not tighten it hard. Also some carbs have a high speed needle and some have a low speed needle and some have both. You need to tell us what kind of carb and what it is going on, make. year if known, model and serial number. Also - what was the original problem you had?
 
I suspect the carburetor diaphragm has become stiff from age, and the needle will not work properly. For most, I just order a replacement carburetor. HIPA brand have a decent reputation.
 
valve that lets gas into carb. the reason was i was installing the spring in the wrong hole. thanks all who responded.
