Got it figured out. Wire in wrong location on X2 connector on the circuit board

130 Ground wire was in slot H not slot D. Figured it out after looking at a circuit board on line and thought that looks backwards from what I thought. So grabbed the original board that customer replaced and supplied to me and sure enough What I thought was D was actually H. Funny thing is that wire didn't appear to be fully seated and just looked weird when I first saw it but just thought pin retainer not holding in place correctly. Never thought about it being moved to the wrong spot.

Glad you resolved it.

It's always an adventure to come in behind a DIY who thinks swapping and moving wires around will "fix" something. It's likely the wire came out when they pulled on the connector. Then they just shoved it back in the first empty slot they saw.

I have that happen on both mowers and farm tractors around my area quite often. The stupid thing is that no one will admit they made a mistake or even mention that they have been messing with the wiring.

The other problem is people often think they can blindly bypass circuits/switches or run battery power straight to a component and it will magically work. I call that the "DIY radio install method of the 70's".
 
Does not make sense. That doesn't the ground the starter relay or activate the starter circuit.
Totally doesn't make sense. Pin H on the circuit board is a pin with no circuit connected to it. There is no copper strip leading from that pin, and no continuity with it to any other pin solenoid connection on the board. The only thing I can think of is the other circuit that use that same ground were finding some backdoor to try to find ground and the start wire at pin 5 on X1 was the culprit.

I will suggest that the ground not being present, the control circuit looked for a new path. I've seen this happen many times working on automotive systems especially windshield wiper motors.

I have seen it on trailers over the years also. Loose the ground and the system will try to use the lights as the ground because some automotive systems will be direct to ground when the system is not energized.
 
I learned early in my career as a mechanic to never underestimate a ground or the ground connection. They cannot be trusted by looks alone.
 
As I said does not sense since the starter relay is only ground thru the ignition switch per the schematic. So is no way it can be triggered by grounding the 12v input side as even the regular ground is not connect except in start mode. Otherwise someone monkeyed with the wiring then anything is possible. It either that or JD has published the wrong schematic which possible.

The only think I can think of is, The K2 ignition relay terminal 86 uses the the same X2 pin D as the ground. And with the pin D open it then uses the diode between the X2 pin D and the X1 pin 5 as the ground which happens to be the energize terminal for the starter solenoid.
