Recommendations for a cordless self propelled mower. My wife and I are in our 70’s and pushing a gas lawn mower up and down the steep banks of the ditches next to the highway is getting to be a little too much for us. We are looking at getting a lighter weight self propelled cordless mower. Approximate mowing time would be around 1/2 hour.

The main thing to focus on is if they a service company in your area. Most box store brands only have a garbage 3rd party warranty and no technical support.
Too bad that there are very few young people who hustle and cut yards these days.

The local lawn mower and tractor dealer has a robotic mower made by Kress. Since we are mowing next to a busy 2 lane Highway, I’m also considering a robotic cordless mower for safety sake, but right now those are a bit expensive.

A bit expensive is putting it nicely on the robotic mowers able to mow hillsides . Bottom line: If you buy a big box store battery mower like Kobalt from Lowes, service, repair, and parts will be limited or non existent. If you buy a name brand battery mower like Stihl, from a dealer, you will be able to get parts, service, and repair after the sale.

A;most done with my 70's, so take this with a grain of salt.
There are string trimmer attachments that support the heavy end of the trimmer on two wheels. The whole assembly is still light weight and easy to move around. If you are mowing downhill into a ditch, and then pulling back over and over, you might find a string trimmer on wheels is easier to use.
There are battery operated trimmers and 4-stroke trimmers, and corded trimmers, so you have a wide selection.
I have not seen the trimmer wheel attachment in stores, but there are plastic and metal versions available on aliiexpress for less than $20US.
My old Poulan Weed Eater must weigh over 30 lbs, and I have to use the shoulder strap to use for more than a few minutes. Newer models are a lot lighter and easier to maneuver.
Unless you want manicured level, that should do the job, and the wheel attachment would help with moving, and tend to keep the cutting pretty level.

I had the same problem with a steep area in my yard and struggled with a push gas mower. My solution was to get an electric mower that was self-propelled and much lighter. It's still difficult navigating the embankment (you have to be careful not to slip), but it definately made it easier to complete.

I’ve owned a set of those wheels when I was using my large Ryobi brand gas powered trimmer. They worked good….especially along my concrete driveway. My wife doesn’t like the look of the grass when using a line trimmer, plus we have more than 3,000 square feet of grass to cut. We live on a state Hwy so we have certain regulations that we are tied to. Almost 1/4 acre to cut... Ego sells at least two models, self propelled and you-push-it. They are not cheap.
I have a drainage ditch alongside the drive, and have used an old Sears 19" which is 'bare' of the flap on the back, and it was a workout just going back and forth on one side. It is lighweight compared to newer with self-propel, and you had to maneuver to get the high weeds to the moving blade. Pick up a bit and lower, etc.
I did not know you were considering doing the whole thing, figuring to use the trimmer at the edge near the ditch & highway, and a mower for the remainder. Luckily I have two mowers, one for the 'smoother' parts, and a Snapper for the more rough areas. And small push when I have to trim into the tree area. I better think about what I will do in the next few years as I don't know if I can do it much longer. So far, so good...
