My transmission part number is 589600601. On the shaft that the wheels connect to, I see evidence of grease on over half of the outside of the black case. I'm not sure what signs to look for that the transmission might be on its way out.
Small world. I actually had my bail cable rust out and separate internally on both my mowers. I wonder if the bail cable that engages your self propelled belt isn't on it way out next.
Thanks a bunch. Once you explained what type of engine it is and where to look, I was able to locate a video where valve clearance is being checked on a older but similar model to get a visual idea of the process.
I think the intake valve is on top and the exhaust is on bottom like it is stated...

Wanting to verify my valve clearance. On newer engine models, there appears to be a simple valve cover on the front that exposes the rocker arms. I don't see anything like that here though.
I installed the valve seat with the ridged side facing the carb and the flat side facing the needle.
Ohh I didn't know that was the distinction when testing. I wish there was more written about this.
I did use an oem seat & needle however.

I've replaced the float, needle valve, and the needle valve seat using all B&S genuine parts. From bench testing everything looks great; I test that everything seals right on the bench by turning the carb upside down and drawing a 5psi vacuum...
