I have a Hydro Gear and that is what the manual calls for. I have used it and has worked fine for the last 5 years.

Also look on the valve cover if you have one, if you don't see it ,maybe the valve cover was installed upside down and the numbers are facing down. Mirror or cell phone camera to see.

That does sound like the gas tank drained into the crankcase. Possibly the noise is fuel igniting in the exhaust. Even after you change oil it will smoke for another 5 to 10 minutes cleaning out the muffler. Another possible noise is this engine has hydraulic lifters and may not have enough oil...

By looking at your picture if you removed the four bolts from the bottom of the engine it should let it slide back enough to change the belt.

I have had both of these issues you mention cause clouds of white smoke. One was a dip stick from another engine tricked the user to overfill , if it fits it ships . The other was carb not shutting off the fuel and draining into the engine oil, common on models with gas tank higher then engine .
