OK, so I took the wheels apart again and found that a pinion gear was facing the wrong way. A diagram I found here that said how the punch marks should orient was wrong for my model.

I pulled the starter rope with the spark plug disconnected and there was no resistance. I connected the plug and pulled the rope. A burst of smoke then it runs fine. Thanks for your help.

What a maroon! I tilted my HRX217K6VKA at about a 120 degree angle over the front wheels to lubricate the rear wheel height adjusters. Looked like a great idea until oil started dripping out of the air filter housing. I'm not sure how that happened, but what to do now? Would taking out the spark...
